PS: CONGRATS!! I literally cannot imagine what you're feeling.
It would be a lot harder on them for sure. Their lungs are not fully developed yet but they were breathing on their own for the first twelve hours of their life outside the womb. Eventually they got tired and their breathing diminished enough to put them on a vent as a precaution. Even for full term babies breathing can be an issue. Google "wimpy white boy syndrome" as it is most common in white males.

NICU = Neo-natal Intensive Care, Adam.

A catch-all for any sort of birth-related difficulty; premies are their prime customers, and they've got this stuff down pat.

A few simple protocols, and a lot less sweating over the young 'uns.

It looks kind of severe, but it's all good, and relatively worry-free

Idiots, simply by being idiots, seem capable of achieving randomly bad things that are beyond the imaginings of sensible people.

    I'll explain it even further.

Technical gestational age of viability is 24 weeks. There have been extremely rare cases of babies born as early as 21 weeks surviving and ending up living a normal life.

The main gestational age you'll hear thrown around is 32 weeks. This is the age at which 90% of all newborns have no long-term complications.

Our boys were born at 33 weeks 6 days. At 35 weeks my wife was going to be pulled off bed rest and the doctors would not have attempted to stop her labor when she went into it. As it was, they couldn't stop it at 33 weeks. They were ready to come out.

My nephew (sister's boy) was born stupid-early - weighed 1lb, 6 oz, IIRC.

I want to say 20 weeks or so?

Spent his first 6 months in an incubator, left the hospital at about a year.

Actually we haven't had sex in 4 months. Last time we did she had contractions.

I think that's what Bob was referring to.
