Does Growing Up mean Giving Up?

I remember watching October Sky in physics class, and building model rockets at Science North (our local science museum). Does the fact that instead of talking about expanding knowledge, we're more concerned with expanding margins, and instead of making it out into the universe, we're preoccupied with making more electronic trinkets, make us better, make us grown up and responsible societies, or does it just make us defeatists, the meek, the naysayers who'll be left behind in our doubts?

    What do you guys think?
"This is a ridiculous cause and effect suggestion."
"Yeah, kind of like the sun rising and then morning happening, eh? What are they trying to pull on us?"

"If I wanted to hear from an asshole, I'd fart into a microphone."

"It's easy. Take the last f*ck, and let it go, and thus you shall have no more f*cks to give."

i think it's going to take contact with an alien life-form before we will (collectively as a planet) turn our efforts to expanded space exploration. humans as a species have short-term memories and are difficult to act unless it is a matter of life & death, or there is a proven tangible benefit to doing so.

Agreed. Either this or once we have used up all the resources or space on this planet.

Knowing this with some certainty, is it something we should try to change, and be more proactive about, or simply accept that people are dumb and do nothing?

Say you accept that people are in fact dumb. How do you go about changing them?

People are verrryyy hard to change. I also dont think that there are enough people in the world that care enough or realize we do have a problem to have any big changes come about..

There is a guy around here working on a hydrogen system for vehicles that pretty much recirculates the water and he expects to get hundreds of miles on a gallon.. Now this is a homemade thing and Im surprised he goes around showing people. Hes still working on it and its no where near done, but it seems very awesome.

I didnt get to watch that till now. But imagine the jobs it would create. Imagine the technology that would come about because of these jobs and the drive to create new technology.. /sigh

That guy better be careful who he shows that to. One day him & his family will just disappear and nobody will know anything.

The thing is though, the tech sector (whether it be computers, engineering, etc) is booming now more than it ever did back then. Sure, we don't have a centralized government to put together the stuff on the shelf, but that doesn't mean technology still isn't leapfrogging itself year after year. Hell, just look at the stuff that was brand new just 5 years ago. The original iphone made everyone blow their load in 2007, and now everything about it just seems totally dated. Apple's value is about to soon outpace entire retail sectors of the US, and this huge growth isn't just limited to Apple.
