I grew up with tornadoes living in Kansas, but all the houses there have basements so we were never really worried about ourselves. One year, we had one touch down in our neighborhood, the house that was two houses up the street from ours had one of those old metal swing sets. They didn't use enough concrete I guess, or the tornado was just too powerful, but it tore it out of the ground, and it ended up in the backyard pool of another family 2-3 streets over.

I have first hand experience with these, very nice. My next house (currently own a townhome) will get one for the safety factor.

in any tornado, you want to be in an interior room--one without windows. the most IDEAL form of room would be one with reinforced cinderblock walls and a solid-core door. ideally, the entrance to this room should be facing ANOTHER cinderblock wall without windows or doors--and the access points to this ante-chamber should be on the back-side of this "secure" room. granted, this is all moot if you effectively have a straw roof--hence the idea of placing it underground, flush with the adjacent landscape.
