It’s not a household name, but according to Swiss based sustainable development group The Berne Declaration, the honors for the title of world’s worst company goes to Brazilian mining giant Vale (VALE).
Berne and their partner, environmental group Friends of the Earth, announced their annual Nobel Award of Shame to the Brazilian multinational mainly for its role in helping to build the Belo Monte dam, the largest hydroelectric power plant in the Amazon rainforest, and a host of alleged labor rights abuses in dozens of countries worldwide. At least they're not waiting for the ministry to give them a stop-work order like they did last June. The sad part is that INCO mines (prior to them being taken over by Vale) were some of the safest in the country.Vale's general manager for Ontario says operations at all five mines in the Sudbury area will be suspended indefinitely while the death of a miner — 47-year-old Stephen Perry — is investigated.
