I was in the liquor store and this story came on. Me and the guy working there heard it and busted out laughing. We both thought it was a joke. It had to be a joke. You Just Can't Write That Shit!
I was reading an article on Yahoo! about a high school in Utah that was denied their new mascot out of fear of offending someone. The mascot the students themselves had voted on and chosen was... wait for it... hold on... A COUGAR!!
Yes, really, a school board was afraid of offending "middle aged women" who engage in relationships with younger men. Something that's usually a good topic to joke around with. I've met plenty of women who are cougars in the dating world, and are not offended by the term - hell a couple enjoy the title.
Anyway, I was reading this article and began to get really frustrated with how our country is so concerned with being PC (politically correct) ALL THE TIME. Awhile back, I recall of hearing about a few books being reprinted with less demeaning words in an effort to go politically correct. I get that we shouldn't be so degrading and mean to each other. However, wasn't our country also based on freedoms where one of those is freedom of speech and expression? Sometimes, I feel we as a country are oversensitive, and this factors into the PC movement having any momentum.
What are your thoughts on being PC? Is it really so necessary to censor ourselves SO MUCH? Do you agree that people are too sensitive or that this aids into the push to be PC? Does the act of political correctness infringe upon the freedoms of speech/expression that we covet so much?
