My ’92 TT originally did funny things with the alarm also. One oddity was sometimes when you opened the rear hatch, like you said, the alarm would go off. Did it more when it was new but rarely anymore. Never was quite sure why it did that either.

It was an early '92 as I bought it in Dec of '91 brand new. Still have it too.

I still remember the day I learned how this alarm works. It was 1998 and I was parked right by the pier in Huntington Beach on a first date and she had left her windows down so I reached in and opened the door for her from the inside handle. Alarm goes off, scares the shit out of me and I try pressing the lock/unlock buttons and starting the car to no avail. I ended up reading the owners manual to learn I had to use the key to lock/unlock the drivers to disable the alarm. It took me around five minutes to figure this out with at least 100 people wondering what was going on. One of my most embarrassing car related moments!

Thanks for all the info guys. I have never ever seen a "security" light on the dash, I will have to check more closely tomorrow from the outside. So if you unlock the passenger door will the alarm go off?

Sounds like the odds are I don't have keyless, but I guess I will call the dealer with the VIN and make sure. Car was from original owner and came with two mitsu keys so I'm guessing it doesn't.

I never lock the car from the outside, does this passive alarm set when the power door locks are used?

If you look in the car manual it talks about it too I know if you push the auto lock on the driver side twice fast it should engage it and the security light on dash comes on it's nice and free but annoying.

It sets when you lock it. Doesn't matter how you lock it.
