    Machining cost

I'm trying to decide if I want to go with a 3.1 build or not, I'd like to actually build the engine up but I don't have the ability to do the machining. My question for you all, is what did you guys pay for some standard machining operations. Things like the bore and hone to match new pistons, or to balance the rotating assembly. What about grinding and polishing a crank or what typically do they charge to hot tank the engine when they are done?

There are a couple race shops around here for the local dirt track, but I cant seem to find anyone that has had work done by them and can vouch for their ability. I may end up flying my stuff up to Ray's shop as hes only like an hour flight from me. At least I know if I go there, I know it's getting done right.

Just looking to get some ball park figures before I go to some of these places. Thanks ahead of time guys.

Should cost between 550 and 700 for everything. As long as you doublecheck their work you'll be fine. You can buy an Engine Math and Assembly book and use it as a guide to quality measure the machine work and rotating assembly. All the journal and pin measurements will be listed in it. Good luck!

the shop here that did a engine for us charged about 600 to bore, hone, resize rods, balance, and installed pistons on the rods. if you are going to forged pistons wait until you get them as they have different clearance than factory cast ones. make sure you tell the shop what dimension to bore the block to and measure it yourself when its done. also be careful to do the assy yourself or send it to ray ..as the shop here the reason i say assy it yourself or have ray do it as the shop here destroyed a 3s engine by putting the thrust bearings in wrong and engine was ruined in less tha 100 mikes. blamed it on crank walk, no s--t... for piece of mine i would have ray do the job..

I'm thinking about having ray do the machining. I want to assemble it, not because of cost but because I want to. I have been a built not bought kind of person. I'm an aviation mechanic by trade, I should be able to follow the manual and recall the disassembly. I just want to know the machining is done right, because I know little about it and don't have proper tools to measure it. Thanks for the info guys, I didn't want to go into some place and have them give me a line of bs because I look young.

having ray do the machine work is a good idea. you can do the assy if you have a 3s manual. just dont put the thrust bearings in wrong, you will need a dial indicator to check there cearance.. if i remember right it is .002 to .008, also check other folks on here as i think the thrust bearing assy is confusing ..do not let a shop with no experience of our engines assy it.
