    Question Clutch master

    Hi All,

I went for a drive tonight and the clutch went on me. From what I can tell the piston is stuck in the master cylinder as the pedal goes back and forth very easily with no restriction. I checked and the fluid was quite low so I topped it up but no improvement.

I read somewhere that the piston in these things is actually plastic and is a common failure point. Anyone else had this problem?

OK the problem was the clutch slave not the master. Massive seal leak. I have looked up the part number on ASA and it list a different part number between 90-91 and every other model. My 1990 model is listed as MD728992 [which is a replacement to MD721277] which was replaced by MD770482. All other models after 1991.02.1 are part number MB670290.

I assume I will be ok to use MB670290 on my 1990 model?

lol you know all this stuff, why ask us?

fwiw I have swapped an old version for the new version and everything continued to operate perfectly so either will work.

LOL. I posted this before I found out you guys had fitted a 1st gen slave to a 2nd gen. FWIW the one I used as for a TR Magna and the part number cross reference matched the 1st gen part number. I believe the 2nd gen unit is actually a heavier duty unit. I also suspect mine failed for 2 reasons. Old age [car is over 21 years old now] and secondly because I fitted an Exedy Heavy Duty clutch which made the slave work much harder and put more pressure on the seals causing premature failure.

I heard that the grey one (which I believe to be 2nd gen) is slightly better.. it's what I installed on my 91 when mine went out. don't remember which part # it was though.
