    Finally Got A New Rig

I mainly got this because I do a lot of rendering with After Effects and I wanted to upgrade to a 64bit platform. The 30" monitor has been on my wish list for a long time so this is gonna be awesome. My current desktop (P4) was SEVERELY limiting what I could do. Comes with Eve Online and Battlefield 3. I'm really excited, but still have to wait for it to be delivered.

    (copy & paste)
Alienware Aurora X79 with ALX Chassis

    Ultrasharp U3011 30" Monitor

Intel Core i7-3960X (Six Core Extreme, 15MB Cache) Overclocked up to 4.2Ghz

    16GB Quad Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz

    Alienware TactX Keyboard, US

Dual 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6950 - AMD CrossFireX Enabled

    2TB RAID 0 (2x 1TB SATA 6Gb/s) 7,200RPM

Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, English, w/Media

    Alienware TactX Mouse

Single Drive: 24X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability

no offense, but you wasted money on an alienware? why not build it yourself?

    p.s.

dual GPU's is nice...though for the price alienware charges, you could probably swing a brand new 7970

How much did you end up spending?

Also, you should be pretty happy with that monitor. The Ultrasharps are quite nice.

Should have at least bought it from Ibuypower.com instead. Alienware prices are ridiculously inflated. They do make a VERY nice product though. You will not be disappointed with it.

I bought it through Dell and yes I will be spending way more than I could somewhere else but I had enough Dell credit so I got it. I had dual 19s before and prefer a large single. All in all it was just over 6k, I'd rather not dwell on the cost though lol

Holy Shit! I guess if you have the money to burn why not? No one ever needs a Ferrari either. But seriously, could it possibly be that much better than a $2500 machine?

Also, you spent that much and use raid 0? Why not raid 10? If you're going to spend $6k, at least buy another two hard-drives, what is that an extra $150? I'm also surprised you didn't go with an SSD for the boot drive.

    Congrats, it's an incredible machine!

I read that the difference between SSD and HDD isn't really that noticeable especially when these 2 drives are going to be doing 6Gb/s.

6Gb/s is your bandwidth, not your speed. Those two harddrives will not be anywhere near the 6Gb/s speed level. SSD are nice because their access time is significantly faster than HDD expecially once raided. That being said, I rock a 3 HD Raid 0 myself and love every second of it.

radeon 5870 in my laptop. what games can't i play?
I imagine BF3 with the graphics about medium would make your computer stutter pretty well. You would definetly be able to play it though. The fact that all I need to do is spend 5 minutes swapping out hardware to get several years of increased playability along with desktops being more cost efficient means I will never buy another gaming laptop. Not worth the money unless you do a lot of traveling IMO.
