I realize this is not ideal but what about adding an additional relay or driver circuit to handle these other solenoids?

The ECU is designed with diodes in place for inrush current and back EMF. The ECU is already equipped to handle the normal solenoids without any external protection. Wiring a relay in place to then control the higher draw solenoid is actually a bad idea. For instance, the BCS uses a duty cycle. This duty cycle (I can't remember the frequency range) is how the ECU can control the boost. Most relays are not so good for that. Relays like to be on or off, not switched on and off 100 times a second (100Hz). That being said, it is possible to then drive another transistor with the appropriate protection circuitry external to the ECU. But costs, complexity, and the fact that you now have additional circuits which can not only fail but add to the delay in activation render this solution not ideal.
I would recommend that you go back to the 5 watt resistor idea. This would at least limit the amount of current the ECU sees, is inexpensive, and since it is a passive component should not add any delay to the circuit.
In the end the GM BCS might be the best three port solution. Lets just see what the coil resistance and current draw are when I finally get it.

Don't know if anyone has seen this while looking at the evoscan website but they're developing evoscan for android and iOs. Seems like it requires either Bluetooth or a USB cable but that will be incredibly convenient if we can use it to log without a computer.
