    NA 5 speed tranny problems.

About a month ago I noticed 5th gear was moving around a lot while giving it gas and letting off. I knew that the 5th gear nut came loose. So I took the end case off re torqued the nut, and put it all back together.

I put it back on the ground started it up and put it in reverse, after about 2 feet I heard some nasty noises a pop then the car bounced forward.

I don't get it this didn't happen till after I tightened the 5th gear nut. How could tightening the nut cause the trany to fail?

So I took the trany out took it apart and saw nothing wrong with it. All the gears are fine shifts fine, diff looks good.

I then took the clutch apart and noticed that one of the springs popped out of the friction disk. WOOHOO I found the problem, ordered the clutch kit, and new flywheel. Put it in put everything back together start up the car let out the clutch in neutral and grinding! It was a nasty grinding noise and on jack stands the car was doing about 40 MPH in neutral. I put it in first gear, let out the clutch and the car died, while still on jack stands.

So here I sit with the trany back out, and with no problems I can see. Im at a total loss, if anyone has any input i will more then appreciate it!

    Thanks for looking guys.

The wheels will spin in nuetral with the car jacked up, but the fact it stalled when you put it in first makes it seem like you are stuck in a gear, putting it in 1st is putting it in 2 gears and binding the trans.

You may have bent a shift rail, or knocked a shift fork loose somehow.

The fact that you took it apart to inspect internals and saw nothing wrong is baffling though.

Well since I couldn't find anything wrong that I could see. I decided to replace the whole rail and shift fork assembly with one out of another tranny I had. So the gasket maker is drying now I'll throw fluid in it tomorrow and hope for the best I guess.
