Thread: output shaft help please.

  1. #1

    Angry output shaft help please.

i am trying to swap out my output shaft and i am having issues. i have it apart to the point of where i have to pry the large gear out of the way to clear the vcu to get it out. problem is that even when i am prying on it it is still over 1/4 inch from letting the vcu slide out. can anyone shed some light on this for me please.

Do you have the center diff cover off? You mentioned not being able to slide the VCU out, but in my experience getting the cover off is the hard part...?

I've always been able to get it out, but I know many people just pull the gear off first.

If you're trying to pull the entire center diff out, that's not going to happen. You need to drive those four pins into the cover, and pop the cover out of the diff, then you can slide the planetary, shaft, and VCU out...

Ok, I will try that tomorrow night.

dang man, it is way easier to pull the bellhousing and midcase from the other side if the trans is out of the car. safer too.

How is it safer? And is it a easy as just unbolting the two halves, or do I have to remove gear sets as well?

the shifter piece has to come out, then all the bolts, and then tap it apart. The gear sets do not have to come out.

It is safer because the end case isn't meant to be pressed or pulled off that way. With where you have it now I'd keep going the direction you did. Once you get the roll pins knocked in you should have just enough room to get the outputshaft cap out. You'll probably need someone to hold over on it while you tap the old output shaft out.

Me and a buddy did this last night
It looks like its out of the car if im not mistaken but for us we jus pulled the end cap and the pulled the bell housing to get it out so much eaiser and ur gonna have to kinda mess with it a but the intermidiate shaft gear is the one in the way, i think it is, but while ur pulling the bell housing also u mite as well put on the brace also

Edit also like forest said the shifter linkages have to come out should be 2 bolts

Take pics and document the procedure. There used to be a few writeups on how to do it this way (with the tranny in the car though) and all the pics/links are now dead.
