Anyone have any experience with these? Reliable?
Any other better turbo diesel?

Any other better turbo diesel?
I dd a TDI Jetta. They're very reliable and get great mileage too. I average about 38 mpg city which is usually short trips and lots of idling. On the highway I get about 46 mpg going 80 mph. I've gotten 48 before going 85 the whole trip. If you went slower I could easily see 50+ no problem. In the year I've owned the car I've only done a few oil changes and replaced one small coolant hose that started leaking. Other than that I make sure to use a diesel additive for every fill up because of the ultra low sulfur content in the fuel now which means less lubricity resulting in the injector pump and injectors failing much sooner. Spend $1500+ fixing that or just run some additive. I run Howe's available at most auto parts stores or trucker gas stations. It works as an anti-gel also in the winter time. You can google a thread which will show the lubricity content of additives. My next maintenance will be another oil change, new air filter, new fuel filter, and new cabin filter. It's only required every 20-30k miles. Make sure you look for a TDI that has G12 coolant in it not another kind(it's pink in color), a synthetic oil which meets the VW spec(I like to use Pentosin high performance synthetic oil), and make sure to ask for records of when the timing belt service was done. It's only required every 100k miles but it's very critical and can run $800-1000 if you have someone do it.

before we moved to the US. my dad would get a different (at least 10 y.o.) car every year, imported from Germany. 80% of them were VW diesel (all kinds) turbo and without. no issues what so ever.
so, I was about to get one, but recently found out that a 3rd child is on the way, so will be looking for Q7 tdi. it has 3rd seat row. so yes, I'd get VW TDI, jetta, golf, tuareg, etc...
I too DD a VW diesel and use Howe's. 140K Miles on her thus far and no major problems other than standard maintenance. I highly recommend them. Now if the cost of diesel would drop down to the cost of regular unleaded I'd be a happy camper.
I love my Jetta TDI. 6-speed manual.
I got the 2010, they decontented the Jetta for 2011.
Gone are the rear disc brakes, rear independent suspension, touch screen radio, soft interior trim pieces and alloy rims (NOT HUB CAPS) as standard.
Americans wanted a cheap car, so they got one.
Golf TDI is also a nice buy.
