I would say 25 minutes would be above average, but I guess it depends on how you're normalizing it. Relative to all people that run once a week or so, I'd say 25 minutes for a 5k is great.

Keeping an 8-minute mile pace for 3 miles is very tough. Many people can run an 8-minute mile, but few have the endurance to sustain that pace for a 5k.

I was actually just talking about 5, 8, and 10k's the other day.

When I was a freshman in high school we had to do a 20 minute run every week for gym. I would do 2 miles in 20 minutes. It wasn't a blazing pace, but I kept the same pace for the whole 20 minutes. I'd be happy with being able to run a 30 minute 5k.

I think I am going to start jogging after work now.

Ok, one thing I will say is that the patient pavilion (apartments) that we are staying in just happen to have 4 stories. SO, I am loving going up and down the stairwell throughout the day. I am making lame excuses just to go up and down again and get more exercise.
My original goal was to do some jogging around Johns Hopkins campus, but there are some rather questionable entities out there that have made me reconsider. So, the stairs are making up for that! Plus they have a treadmill and a stationary bike that we can use, too. Woot!!

I though I'd throw out an update of my own. As I posted earlier I was just shy of 250 a year and a half ago and had been under a Doctor's watch for about a year when I hit that high mark. He had been on my case to loose weight because my bloodwork numbers were progressively getting higher in the hemoglobin/glucose area and I was heading towards being classified as pre-diabetes. I was consistantly 6.1 for the A1c reading for the last 3 tests prior to this last one in July. The numbers came in at less than 5.7 for the A1c and 99 for the glucose (down from a high of 112) and put me into the normal range out of the pre-diabetes range. Just as the Doctor had been telling me for over 2 years, the numbers would come down if I could lose a pretty good chunk of weight. The weight I did lose was the fat that does the most damage and that would be the stuff under the abdominal muscles and around the organs. I was placed back on dayshift hours and I am not getting the sleep I was on the afternoon shift and I can see the difference it is making. (not so good) I am finally going to try and buckle down and include exercise into my routine since summer is winding down and I am becoming less active already. Great news I thought I'd share since the motivation I had was to loose the weight and turn around and run from type II diabetes.
