jeez. why bother trying? i've lost 11 lbs since i returned home from DC, and i'm down to ~172 lbs. so not only do i have to work harder and losing MORE...i'd have no hope of competing against people who could easily lose 1/3rd of their body weight & still be only considered "marginally overweight".

Thadd - sympathy is in the dictionary somewhere between shit and syphilis.
Ranked No. #1 in initial quality

Idiots, simply by being idiots, seem capable of achieving randomly bad things that are beyond the imaginings of sensible people.

I'll throw my extra large hat into the competition.
    Currently:
    5'10"
    227lbs
Body fat % 25 (according to my Tanita scale, which I know is not an accurate measurement, but it's at least something to compare to)
    Waist: 48" at the naval

I think I should add that I have degenerative arthritis in my knee that pretty much prevents me from any running or distance walking. I might be able to do some biking, but even that is painful.

IPD - 1. It's in the interest of competition and fairness and 2. it's bad to be negative, a negative vibe here isn't really necessary, so if you want to participate, that is fine, keep the negativity out.

If I said you can include all the weight you have lost in the whole year, and you lost 20 lbs for example and during the competition you lost another 30 lbs maybe, then those guys that started the competition on 12-16 lost 30 lbs are going to question my reasoning for allowing the use of previous weight loss outside of the competition. It is human nature, so while you may have lost a considerable amount of weight already, that doesn't mean that you can't participate, but also keep in mind that just because you lose say 10 lbs doesn't make me think of you any differently that you have lost something. So instead of thinking of this as something big you are going to win, think of it as a little friendly competition to maybe push you to trim back and it might help to talk about it with fellow 3Sers in the process.

Just in the spirit of this thread, my plan is to sign myself up for some indoor soccer this winter at a local sportsplex to help me get into shape and I am going to condition myself before this by doing some running outdoors in the cold. As long as your core is warm, you can run, so I am going to run this winter.

I apologize for that. Alan, I have to say though I am really proud of you man, that is a serious undertaking to trim that much back, if you have gone this far, it can't hurt to keep at it!

Stay positive guys! I can honestly say the best way to approach any weight loss plan of any proportion is to stay positive and be energized. Excercising gives you that energy that you didn't think you could get.

My goal is to trim back to a size 32/34. I wear a size 38/40 currently and I used to wear a size 30/32 6 years ago. 6 years might seem like a long time, but that is approximately 23% of my life that I have been gaining weight! I try to think in perspective, while it may be young, I definitely shouldn't be where I am today.

I wouldn't say that I am fat, but I could shed a few pounds. I am 5'10" ~ 175 lbs. I honestly like my weight, just not my belly. If I could figure out a way to eat healthy, but stay from being hungry, I would lose weight just from that. I have a stupid high metabolism to where I am hungry all the time.

I wont throw my hat in, but maybe one day I will get the motivation to tone up, and drop a few pounds.

offhand, 15-20 lbs is about the max you could/should probably lose...less if you have more muscle than average.

i'm 5'8" and i'm shooting for 150. i BMI says that 130 is on the low end of healthy weight for me...but i think that's a little ridiculous. even at 140 i'd be a waif.
