Thread: What would you do with a $20k budget?

  1. #21
So the general consensus is to update/"restore" the SL and find a different platform? This is all play money. I could dump the rest into the investments I already have I suppose, but it's not "needed". I already have a DD so the SL might just get some TLC and sit. I'll never sell that car.

Absolutely. If it has such sentimental value to you I think you'll end up being highly disappointed in the results of dropping $20k into it. It's just not a very smart or cost-effective investment.

note that i said that piece of the project would run over 10 grand: not over 20 grand. i'm doing a 3.5L build: i'm well versed in the costs. 3.8L is even MORE expensive/time consuming/both.

"Wait is that jim in the 3000gt/vette?"

"Noooo, it looks like he swapped the rear off for the veyron today..."

"Awww darn, I like the vette end, its pretty snazzy and reminded me of that guy on craigs list. At first I thought it was ridiculous, but after seeing it in person and after a few beers and a line of coke, I thought 'Hey, not too shabby' "

"Yeah, gotta give that guy some credit, kustom rear end swaps on the daily is pretty snazzy, def 20G's well spent there!"

Become the Admiration of all your meth'd out, burnt out, hillbilly, boy racer, midlife crisis pals EVERYWHERE! The possibilities are endless! Make a 3000gt/viper- 3000gt/AMC pacer -3000gt/porsche - 3000gt/aston martin- 3000gt/aztek- all your unholy union ideas- WHENEVER! WHERE EVER! You can't go wrong!

if you already have a DD then I'm sorry, but get rid of the SL and get a VR4 if you want anything other than FWD, 20K will not cover a 3.8L swap assuming you go turbo, and why do a 3.8 AWD without turbo

assuming you do things properly, the engine prepped and ready will be 10k right there, modded brackets and everything another 2K, turbo kit probably 5-6k...you can see where 20k is long gone and you have not even braced the driveline...

clutch 2k+ (for one that LASTS)
    center/rear maybe front Diff's
    beef up plates
    rear axles
then you have your fuel system...I'd say 1-2K
then your ECU and stuff like injectors...air flow sensors...upgraded rad...20k won't come NEAR covering it.

so it's simple, want to keep the shape and go a lot faster...go a VR4, want RWD, get something else.

Yeah I just wanna +1 everyone that say sell your SL and go for a VR4!

You will get a VR4 in really nice shape for that kind of money. Or why not go for a Spyder. Nice in the summer or if you live in warm year round climate.

I'm pretty sure I've stated multiple times that the car isn't going anywhere.

This car was the last thing my father and I worked on as a "father/son" project.
I met my wife in this car.
I conceived a child in this car.
I've acted stupid in this car (including getting shot at).
This car has been at two family member funerals.
This car was with me on my 21st B-Day in Vegas.
This car has seen the entire Southwestern U.S.
This car has survived two military transports.
This car was the first thing to drive into the first house I bought.
This car taught my sister, brother, wife and multiple friends how to drive stick.
When I got out of the military this car was the ONLY thing I owned, my entire life fit into the back of this car.

I AM NOT SELLING THIS CAR...
