Toyota issue - potentially a big one

    2000 Corolla LE

I never thought a seized power steering pump would wreak so much havoc. It seized up last night and took the belt with it. Well, little did I know Toyota uses the serpentine belt to drive the WATER PUMP. I must have driven the car 20-30 miles without the belt on, all the time not paying any attention to the temp gauge MAXED OUT!

I found a temporary bypass belt and threw it on. Now the car gets hot as it is driven at higher speeds, cools down at idle, and I get both p0115 (ECT sensor malfunction) and p0171 pending code (system too lean bank 1). Did I completely fuck the head and destroy my head gasket or what?

Vacuum reduction, Powdercoated misc, cruise relocate, Evo9 BOV, Custom catch cans, Russell fuel filter, SS braided fuel lines, High flow fuel loop, Autogage fuel gauge, Catless DP, DNP Y-pipe, Fuel pump hotwire.

Probably. Do a compression/leak down test

Turns out the slight overheating was due to loss of coolant. I'm hoping it's from boiling over, and not burning. Good signs are that there's zero smoke coming from the exhaust and both codes have disappeared (not cleared, but went away on their own). I'm going to keep an eye on the coolant over the next few days and do a full flush as well.

I have to say, I'm amazed at how cool this engine stays. Even after overheating the temp gauge went down almost halfway after sitting for about 15 minutes. I'm pretty sure the battery in the car is still the original factory battery... and I drove without an alternator for that long and restarted the car 2-3 times on pure battery.

    Bulletproof.

I'm going to check it in a few days. Keeping my fingers crossed.

On a side note. idk why these cars even came with power steering. It's pretty simple without.

I bought a 99 corolla with 62K for my daughter two years ago. Only thing I had to do was replace the battery (broken terminal) and rebuild the contacts for the starter solenoid.

i work for toyota. the 171 is from a dirty maf sensor. the 115 is because the car is taking forever to warm up, or a dead sensor. replace the sensor.

I've had a 171 before. Cleaned the MAF, as I knew it was a common occurence, problem went away.

As for this time, BOTH codes were tied to the overheating. Once I fixed the pulley and got the water pump pumping again, both codes went away.

A lot of Toyotas just got recalled recently from the crank pully/balncer? separating like it does on our cars causing loss of power steering. Better look into that too.
