make sure you get the polarity right when applying power directly to the fan. I believe they will only work if polarity is correct [unlike most motors that will simply spin in reverse]. Also remember one of our fans is wired in reverse. One switches on the pos+ side the other on the neg- side.
I believe one the 1st gen the 2 radiator mounted sensors are simple on off switches. One for low speed and another for high speed. When the temp is below a certain range one will be on and when the temp reaches temps above it's cut off it turns off and the 2nd sensor then turns on. You should be able to simply put a jumper across the 2 switching pins on the wiring harness and simulate the sensor turning on. However I would think that if one sensor was faulty then the other would still work and the fan would come on either above or below the cut off temp [depending on which sensor is faulty].
