I have had a piece of metal jam the exhaust wheel. Never did find out where it came from. Turbo had been fine for over 5K miles, so it is hard to imagine the metal fell in during install, but who knows? Other two failures were apparently faulty balance work which just wore the turbo(s) out in less than 50 miles (twice). I heard the "death squeal" when the metal jammed the exhaust wheel. It was horrible. I've put rods through blocks that didn't sound that awful.

Good news! The rear turbo spins just fine. I pulled the intake tube off of it tonight and it spins easily with a finger. I took the front heat shields off (yes, I reinstalled every single heatshield and bolt when I put in the DR650s, because blue car) and started soaking all of the bolts in PB. Hopefully sometime in the next couple of days I'll pull the front turbo out of the car and see what's up. I'm intrigued to say the least.

    Well how about this?

I don't see any physical damage to the exhaust wheel and the turbo spins just fine now that this stupid thing is out. Looks like I should be OK just putting the turbo back in the car Do I even need another one of these rings?

It's a gasket ring that goes between the manifold and turbo.

Good. The rings were replaced with brand new ones when I installed the turbos 3 years ago. No way I'm putting them back on the car if I don't have to.
