1G pop-up HIDS! limited edition headlights from Lat 42

    UPDATE: 5/22/2012

Ok, I should probably start with the best part, pictures.

These are old pictures from my first prototype. The finished product is still in development, but it'll look and fit much better. I posted up these pictures to give an idea what the finished product will look like.

here's some more info for anyone that's interested.

This isn’t a product you can install yourself. The mounting bracket for the H4666 sealed beam is riveted in place. Converting to projectors requires drilling out the old rivets and installing a new bracket with special rivets (and a pricey riveting tool that I bought for this).
You’ll have to send me your headlights – the whole motor and assembly – and I will convert them. You pay shipping one way and I’ll send them back. It will take me a week at the most to do the conversion, so with ship time expect to be headlight-less for at least two weeks. If it’s your daily driver I may do a core service.

The cost to have your headlights converted is $600. If you think that's too expensive you need to have your head checked, because a lot goes into this conversion.

The lights will come back ready to be installed – just plug them in and they’ll function like stock. changing a bulb will be even easier. They’ll have Hella 60mm high and low projector modules, 9005 bulb on the high beam and 4300k HIDs on the low beam. They’ll be set up and aimed for use on US roads, but as with any aftermarket light, this is not street legal.

I'm calling these a limited edition because I'm only making 10 of them. One set is for me, so that means only 9 other lucky guys will have these lights on their 3S. If you’d like to buy a set, please PM me your name and email address and I’ll add you to the list. I know people will back out, so don’t worry if you’re not one of the first 9. There will be a wait list. Please only put your name on the list if you’re serious and have the money set aside. I will start accepting payments in December and begin converting lights over the following months. Feel free to ask questions if there's anything I didn't cover!

Thanks for the interest and support everyone,

Not that I can afford it right now, but living all the ways over here wont help. Looks like a great set up. Maybe one day.

I've made some more progress, and I'm to the point where I know it's all going to work out really well. My rivet method and the spacing and size of the lights all work out. It was a challenge; there's not much room for error in those crazy 3S headlights.

I got my hands on the prototype brackets just before Christmas. They took some cutting/welding to fit right. I've already revised the design, just gotta take it to the metal shop again.

The Hella 60mm projectors come with 9005 bulbs, but I got some HIDs from DDM tuning to replace them. I had to put HID bulbs in both the high and low beam, because the clearance is so tight that only the shorter ends of HIDs bulbs will fit.

Here's my first test - ignore the flickering at the end, just a loose temporary ground.

There are 4 small ballasts that need to be mounted behind the headlight bucket. Other than that, it installs and functions just like a stock unit. Next up is the front bezel - then I'll be ready to do the first conversions. About 6 of them have already been spoken for.
So it's only taken me a full year to get this far. Making stuff like this takes a lot of time!

Looking good so far. I might be interested in this depending on how the final product looks. This was something I was hoping to fabricate myself one day, but a ready to install kit would be nice too.

We follow the earth. The earth follows the stars. The stars know their way and though the body dies. The stars will remain, like the waves of the sea and restless slate.
