    Auto Trans

How well/reliable are the auto AWD trans?

I love the reliability of the N/A but would like the fun of the AWD. I know that someone will say "buy a TT" but my N/A will start every morning and I'd trust that thing to drive anywhere.

Was looking at them and thought it would be cool.

They are just as reliable as the fwd version. You just need to keep it well maintained.

Saw a few on eBay for super cheap, why? No one want these?

My '95 R/T has what looks like the bolt pattern on the trans for the transfer case. Was this the same trans as a DSM? I've heard but didn't know.

They are cheap because there are no awd automatic 3/s's in this country

Your R/T has what looks to be a mount for a t-case, but I can assure you it is not.

The internals of our non-turbo transmissions are the same as a DSM, it's the casing that is different

    this.

the hidden gem of the 3/s world is that awd atx is dirt cheap because they never sold them OEM with that configuration in the US. mine was $300 shipped, and it's working like a champ--i didn't even rebuild it--and that's on a tt engine.

the xfer case is the same with DSM's. the rear end is the same as 2g vr4/tt's. the driveshaft is virtually identical to the 6-speed driveshaft, except for the nipple. as hans said, bellhousing is different; internals are the same. what that means is that there's a LOT MORE parts and suppliers for internals on them than on the 5 or 6 speed awd trans.

i've had mine for over a year (it was installed used) and no problems. i always flush my trans fluid every 15k (probably a bit excessive, but i err on the side of caution) and it always comes out pink like new. all you really need for top-end durability is a trans cooler & a magnetic inline filter. change the inline filter every 15k & you shouldn't have any problems at all.

    p.s.
i think i ordered mine from JDM depot. they have a dragon logo, i think. haven't heard anything negative from them, and i've heard a couple other 3/s owners who were satisfied with them as well.

    p.p.s.

like i said, dirt cheap. that's not a bad thing, trust me. at this price, you can strip it & rebuild it ground-up with the most expensive shit you can find...and it will STILL cost less than an OEM 5 or 6 speed.

    p.p.p.s.

I loved my atx awd tt. A lot of people laughed at me (including Hans) until they drove it. TONS of fun .

and if the gal who currently owns it could be talked down to a grand or so, i'd consider buying it...as i already have a spare motor that i just pulled from my car.

She wants enough to cover her flight.... Shouldn't be hard. LOL. The car itself is super clean, no that, etc. No idea what condition the paint is in now since its been sitting outside for 2+ years. But I had repainted let's of it just before she bought it.
