Make it official, real world hood tests for the 3/S. Aero, cooling, Tuft wool?

Had some spare time to burn today and figured I'd post up some info on these hoods. I own and have specifically tested 4 different style hoods; OEM, DEFT 575, Aerokit GT 300, and this Custom Modified Scoote 2. I have tuft wool tested all of these hoods and logged coolant temps on my AEM. Another thing to note, I have speed tested all of these to atleast 150mph and also hillclimb tested all of these to see for myself which hood has the most "ideal" design for aero and cooling.

By far the best hood I've ran so far? This is THE one, which I slightly modified. This hood began as a Scoote 2.
I shaved the vent pockets and raised the waterfall edges which increased the vent area and pretty much eliminated the pressure area right at the windshield.

The hoods design does a great job in evacuating air in the tumble / pressure zone under the hood. It also virtually eliminated the dead zone at the windshield and additionally draws air thru the fmic and radiator. (FYI just finished final fitting and reshaping this so it looks a little rough since it hasnt been painted yet, so don't hate ). Long story short, I've cruised it the past two sundays at the midnight meets which are a BIG DEAL... and it's $$$ for sure. I love the design and I love the function.

Observations, there is no dead zone with this hood as illustrated and JPEG'd. 1) All the air works its way from front to rear. 2) There is no rearward movement, dead air, or tumble infront of the winshield. 3) I do not have to raise the rear edge of the hood. 4) The hood is flush with all adjacent panels and functions properly without sacrificaing aero and under hood pressure differentials. 5) I can literally put my hand outside the window or thru the sunroof with the glass removed and feel the heat being pulled out of the engine bay.

Here's a vid. It's a little choppy at first but it smooths out. You can see the tufts placed at the base of the windshield no longer tumble, and all the air moving over the hood is directed toward the roof, nothing is being pulled back into the hood like it were a cowl or being overcome by a pressure differential below the hood. One thing that should be noted, there is a low pressure area right in front of the mirrors about 3/4 back near the edge of the fenders.

Real world, As a test of the design I decided to only run one radiator fan while leading this last Labor Day weekend's Nationwide Underground club ride. There were 500 cars attendees and 200+ that we able to complete the killer cruise. I led the cruise from LODO (5000ft) to the Top of 14,000ft Mt. Evans at midnight last Sunday and ran 50 miles or so all out. (Again, like I said, I led this cruise and only ran one radiator fan). I never heated up past 215 degrees. In roughly 45 minutes time our club covered 50miles and climbed nearly 10000ft. I was boosting 22psi on 91 octane pump gas, and my radiator is a KOYO. I give a lot of the credit to this hood, and an AEM, both are friggin bitchin'!

Anyway, here's some pics I took this afternoon and a vid if you want to see how air is moving in real time. If I get some time I'll see if I can dig up my other pics on the other hoods. If anyone else has some info or vids on this topic it would be cool to se your results with tuft wool, possibly smoke, or whatever as well.

Love to hear about some other hoods, real world testing, and see some vids too!

first off, thanks for posting. it's great to have some empirical evidence for once.

second, it would be nice to get a sticky--which would help people find this evidence easier.

third. IN YOUR F**KING FACE YOU NAYSAYERS WHO SAID MY HOOD SUCKS!!!

    p.s.

i TRIED to arrange a group buy on a custom hood which was pretty much IDENTICAL to the mods you described here. larger vents (not skewed like the scoote2), eyelids, the works. never went anywhere. damn shame. i STILL don't think people will listen though. too many people like stealthee hollering about "fugliness" for anyone to actually pay attention to cold, hard results.

I suspected that it would be one of the most functional. Thanks for the work!
I just can't bring myself to buy one for a 1st gen. Looks great on a 2nd gen or 99 but is too rounded for a 1st gen.
I am thinking of putting a ford GT500 hood vent/extractor on my car. I think it will look good and many have reported good results on coolant temps.

BTW the scoote2 hood fits pretty bad and is way too weak for serious duty. A lot of work to fit it because its way off on the gaps. It also as flexible as bubble gum. it needs serious reinforcement I can bend the vents around 1cm with a light effort from my pinky. On the bright side it looks nice and gives you a lot more exhaust manifold clearance. Which is good for me I was having problems with that.

I gotta take a moment to say thank you to the guys at the body shop. These guys are literally working 12+ hour days every day to make this car happen for the race. I cannot say thank you enough. They are working way harder than they are being paid for. It means a lot to me.
From AMB, I think the Scoote 2 is a good start though.
