    If you remove the airbag...

and replace it with an aftermarket steering wheel, will you fail safety inspection? I put a Momo wheel on when I was in FL, and they don't do much in the way of inspection, no emissions testing either.

However, now that I'm back in TX, I'm wondering if they would fail me for not having an airbag. Anyone know? Car is a 1991 TT.

I'd just tell them that car never had one and make sure that SRS light not visible at any time. I got away with it in a similar situation.

That's probably what I will say, since they actually weren't mandated until 95 I think. Ugh, getting my car inspected in TX has always been... tricky.

Would the horn still work? I dont know about tx but in pa you need a horn to pass the safety inspection.

You just are supposed to (notice I didn't say have to because it all depends on where it gets inspected) have a horn. That horn doesn't have to be on the steering wheel.

It probably depends on the state though. Thing is airbags are not part of most inspections, just as long as the SRS light doesn't illuminate.

EDIT: Nothing about the air bag for Texas State Inspection.

My mechanics 91 vr4 passed with an aftermarket wheel. We just put a horn button on the dash.

Wait wait. You yanks do it differently dont you. Why not use the horn thru the middle of the steering wheel? You know, the center section? Keep it simple kids.

Not all aftermarket wheels have a horn option.

I've got a horn in the center of it, so that's not a problem. Looks like this weekend I'll be putting my old stock exhaust back on and taking it in. Sigh, at 25 yrs old, emissions is no longer required. I can't wait for that day to come, this is such a pain.

I was asking a similar question about air bag legalities, since I've removed mine and have been debating selling, but was wondering if that were illegal...I was told, something after ten years, air bags don't matter, haven't checked into it yet and not sure if it's a state to state thing...but thought I'd mention that bit of info that was shared with me
