Okay, guys - I haven't been into guns for about 35 years - what do you think of this?

    FNH 7.62x51 (.308) FNAR Semi-Auto Rifle

    Neighbor has one for sale...
Ranked No. #1 in initial quality

Idiots, simply by being idiots, seem capable of achieving randomly bad things that are beyond the imaginings of sensible people.

They are a very nice Belgium gun. That's the NATO round for the .308 in a semi auto SCAR. Our military started using SCARS in recent history. I can't imagine what he wants for it during these chaotic times.

The 7.62x40 WT is based on the inexpensive and readily available 5.56x45 Nato cartridge case. The 5.56 case is shortened to 1.560” and then re-sized (single operation) in a standard 7.62x40 WT sizing die which results in a formed 7.62x40 WT case with a finished overall case length of 1.565”. The cartridge is designed for 110-150gr .308” diameter bullets loaded to supersonic velocities, but if chambered in a 1-8 twist barrel is also suitable for heavy bullet subsonic use also. ...may sound odd, but the idea is 7.62 rounds in 5.56 mags
That's interesting. I have never heard of anyone doing that conversion. I can see getting them to fit in a different mag, but is it worth it?? I mean, you can pick up 7.62x39 all day long that's made for AK's/SKS's, etc.

yea, but IMHO the only good thing about an AK is the cheap ammo. i rather like the idea of 7.62 bullets in a 30 round 5.56 mag, but if i had my druthers, i would grab a Colt901 which can fire both 7.62 and 5.56

funny comparo between AK and AR...

if you cant fix it with a hammer...then you have an electrical problem

So would you be able to take those loads through a .308 upper in an AR?

Me either, but he's got lots of other nice hardware.

This one has several extra mags (20 round) and other doodads.

Really torn; this is one of those situations where I really can't afford it, but I could, if I can talk myself into it, y'know?

Be nice to widen the perimeter...

well i suppose technically you would be able to since you are modifying the length, but 7.62 isnt dead on .308 is it?

Thats really a question for Wilson Combat, since i know they make uppers for them!

Wilson Combat | 7.62x40 WT Project

The 7.62x40 WT only requires one unique component, the barrel to build. All other standard AR platform 5.56 caliber components are compatible. The 7.62x40 WT will function reliably with standard unmodified Lancer L5 magazines if downloaded to 17 or 24 rounds or Wilson Combat has modified Lancer L5 AWM magazines with 18/19 or 28/29 round capacity available that function ultra reliable.

I have to say, I'd much rather just go the route of an AR-10 or any other 7.62 built gun than go through that. Not only that, Wilson Combat is absurdly pricey. I have used their 1911 mags and they seem to work quite well. However, from the company that prices their 1911's at $5,000...yeesh. I'll just go with an AK or variant.
