the origin of the name "VR4"

In any case, I was recently browsing the ralliart site and came up on something interesting in there documents. The rally class they race in, R4, or officially variante rallye r4, is abbreviated "VR4".

Of course the GTO wasn't a rally car, but remember it isn't the first to carry the vr4 badge. The gallant vr4 came first, and if I'm not mistaken that was a "vr4" race car.

Can anyone confirm or deny whether this might be where the name came from. It seems more likely to me then the "viscous realtime-4 wheel drive" idea
very interesting find... and i think he may have solved it. it does make perfect sense since ralliart did have a pretty big hand in marketing back in those days.

i believe it was deft spyder who got the interview with one of the designers and then refused to release the DVD when people couldn't find some obscure photos that he demanded. does anyone else recall?

R4 is a new class designed to compete with S2000, so no, it's not the answer.

Viscous Realtime 4WD is probably correct, the Galant had the same style viscous system.

Viscous Realtime 4WD is what I've always heard it means, and this was backed up on several occasions. The first time I heard it, was from my neighbor in 92-93, who was looking to buy one. His family was Japanese, and he had a big stack of literature on the car, some of it from JDM publications, where that was the reason given. I've also heard that from a few Mitsu techs in the 90's (good luck finding a tech today that knows anything about the cars.) I've also heard import folks at either Jotech or Alamo Autosports say that is the meaning as well.

But if you recall that thread that deft fucked everybody over with, that was a backronym that was invented after the fact. he is the only one that really knows the meaning.

    Most likely explanation.

Or maybe he got hit by a bus.

I disagree. His actions regarding the video are enough proof to me that his word is highly suspect. As such, I'll continue to believe what I've seen/been told countless times.

EDIT: In fact, at this point, since Mitsu/Dodge don't really have anything to do with our cars anymore, or any knowledge regarding them, I'd say that WE are pretty much the definitive source of knowledge for them. And since most members know Viscous Realtime 4, if any newcomer were to ask, that's exactly what he'd hear.

wow. i'd almost forgotten about deft being a little whiny bitch. yeah, some of the "demands" were a bit obscene. looking back now, i wonder if he was medicated properly...
