I was consistently getting a max of 3 mbps down, despite paying for business class cable. After plugging into the modem directly, I realized that it was my good old WRT54Gv3 holding me back.
I played around with my rwin settings, then installed the Tomato firmware, picked a cleaner channel (nobody shares it, only one other AP on adjacent channels), went to short preamble, and bumped up the transmit power by 50% to 63 mw (default = 42 mw). Difference:

Clearly, the wifi is still still holding me back some, but I can't really complain! I thought I had to get a new router, instead I'll just get some nice antennas to go with the power increase.
Anyone with a wifi router should check out Tomato! It is not as full featured as DD-WRT, but I didn't need any of the stuff DD-WRT adds anyway, and I heard tomato is more stable.
