Thumbs up Tomato router firmware - huge speed increase!!!

I was consistently getting a max of 3 mbps down, despite paying for business class cable. After plugging into the modem directly, I realized that it was my good old WRT54Gv3 holding me back.

I played around with my rwin settings, then installed the Tomato firmware, picked a cleaner channel (nobody shares it, only one other AP on adjacent channels), went to short preamble, and bumped up the transmit power by 50% to 63 mw (default = 42 mw). Difference:

    Before tweaks:

    After tweaks:

    Plugged into modem directly:

Clearly, the wifi is still still holding me back some, but I can't really complain! I thought I had to get a new router, instead I'll just get some nice antennas to go with the power increase.

Anyone with a wifi router should check out Tomato! It is not as full featured as DD-WRT, but I didn't need any of the stuff DD-WRT adds anyway, and I heard tomato is more stable.

What D-link are you using? After reading this post, I searched for options for my DGL-4500, but all I found was that frimware above 1.15 was causing major issues with D-link routers like needing to power cycle the router every 96 hours.

Hope you do not fall into that situation with your D-link.

The firmware is based on the hardware inside your router. A lot of routers use similar hardware. If you go to the dd-wrt website it has all of the supported routers and their hardware specs listed out in a big spreadsheet.

This is using a WRT610N router with dd-wrt installed. I don't know what I am supposed to be rated at now, but it started wth 12mbps with 15mbps boost down.... and not sure about up.
