MOBILE, Alabama -- PETA, an animal rights group, applauds Mobile's suspension of fireworks displays due to dry weather, but hopes the city will ban them altogether so as to spare the physical and psychological health of area animals, according to a news release.
In place of fireworks, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals suggests the city go with a laser light show.
"Fireworks displays are a nightmare for both domestic and wild animals," PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in the release. "By switching to laser shows, Mobile can wow watchers and protect animals at the same time."
If the city opts for a laser show instead of fireworks, PETA offers to send "a bevy of beauties wearing American flag bikinis," to pass out veggie dogs to Independence Day celebrants.
PETA representatives are making the pitch in letters to Mayor Sam Jones and his spokeswoman Barbara Drummond, who is also in charge of the fireworks display.
According to the release:
To dogs, cats, and other animals, fireworks displays must seem more like World War III than a celebration. After these displays, animal shelters nationwide report an increase in the number of lost companion animals. Many animals go missing because they panic and jump over fences or break chains; some even jump through plate-glass windows in order to get away from the terrifying sounds. Some animals are reunited with their families, but others are never found or are hit by cars or killed in other ways as they flee.
