vcu fried?i

Just trying to get an idea what I'm in for. I recently finished putting new seals and bearings in the transmission and transfer case as well as a clutch. I was driving last night on my way home and heard a clunk then the engine revved freely. Pulled over, no fluid on the ground, clutch feels normal and will go in all the gears. It just won't move. I'm assuming the vcu went?

Sounds to me like a stripped output shaft. You can still drive the car with a fried VCU.

It will move now but not well. Makes a whining noise. Why would it strip while cruising? I haven't launched it in years and never had an issue since until now. The splines looked good too while it was apart.

Flat out wear will do it. People dont keep there OS's greased and rust will wear the teeth to points. They are supposed to look more like mesas. Eventually enough wear happens to strip it out if not maintained.

I put the car up and tried getting the wheels to spin in gear with the car running. No go. Turned off the car and left it in gear and the front wheels can be spun freely. The back are more resistant. Took it out of gear and all four move freely.

you shouldn't be able to turn your wheels with the transmission engaged & the engine off. if they turn freely, you've got a broken component in your drivetrain. i third the output shaft.

How resistant are we talking here on the rear wheels? I want to say it's a TC issue but since you've been in the trans recently you might have not assembled something correctly. Drain the gear oil out of the trans and check for metal. If you replaced all the bearings it might have needed to be shimmed. Did you check the the preload?

There's normal resistance on the back wheels. The front can be turned with a finger easily. The noise I'm hearing is coming from near the passenger front axle.
