Free Xbox 360 for students who buy a new laptop

My xbox vid card went out. I am hoping when my daughter gets her laptop from the school it will have enough documentation with it to qualify so dad can have the replacement xbox

I fix xboxs and ps3's. What makes you think its the video card. I ask because xboxs don't have seperate video cards. The video processor is a seperate processor, but its built into the motherboard. No actual card, like on pc's. What symptoms is it having (No video, scrambled pic, E74 error displayed on screen) ?

Has no picture, but you can hear it boot in the background. I have tried lo def hi def and vga out. I get a slight flash on lo def on boot. It doesn't even wake the monitor in vga mode. No red lights.

The problem is one of three things.
1. The video port is toast. Least likely of the two problems, but it does happen. No simply fix for this. Port has to be removed and resoldered in place. Connections for the port are so fine, that using your typical soldering iron will not work to make a new connection. Not many people will repair this problem.
2. The GPU has overheated and broken the solder connection that transmits picture. Can be fixed by reflowing the GPU processor. This is one of the more common problems.
3. GPU has overheated to the point of frying the chip. No fix for this available.

Most recommended fix would be to reflow the processor with a reflow station. Heat gun isn't advice, but can be used to accomplish the same thing. Although you have a high chance of melting the board using a heatgun. Plus using a heatgun has proven to temporarily fix the problem more often than permanently fixing it. This is why I use a reflow station for all my repairs. This way I can raise and lower the temperature in increments. Rapidly heating/cooling is not healthy for the components and can cause warping. You can find video's on youtube of how to perform a reflow. If not there are many people, like myself who would gladly do the service for you. Average price people will charge ranges from $25 (People who use unorthadox methods, aka the towel trick or paperclips in the fans) to $75 (highest price i've seen someone charge who actually uses a reflow station). I charge $50 for my service. If you decide to have someone repair the system, make sure you ask what methods they use. There are tons of people who use methods that can horrible damage your system. Search craigslist and you'll probably find tons of people who offer a repair service for consoles.

You should be able to qualify. The only stipulation is that you supply some sort of verification that you're a student (.edu email address, student ID card at participating retailers, etc)
