This is the task of anti-virus/malware detection software like ClamXAV, iAntivirus, Norton, etc.

If you're implying that Apple is suggesting that their machines can't get malware'd, I invite you to look at the contradictions:

shaun, no-one said that there's any such thing as a completely secure computer. apple, however, implied it--through numerous "mac vs. pc" ads.

the irony of apple is that the more adopted their products are; the more targeted their products become. given the dearth of resources apple devotes to security features (read: next to none) i think it's fairly safe to say that apple isn't prepared to handle an onslaught of malware akin to what microsoft deals with on a daily basis.

oh, and just to pour salt in the wounds of apple i-tards:

doesn't take any research. the stories are all over the news....for anyone who isn't totally oblivious, or has an intentionally blind-eye for appple woes.

So, explain to me how this is different than Apple's 'Back to School' sale, where students can buy any laptop (even the low end ones), get the Education discount (10%-15%), and also receive a free iPod Touch worth $229 to sweeten the deal?

I'd be more inclined to go with this deal, sell the iPod, and buy myself an Xbox 360 if I didn't think it'd RROD on me (which I know isn't as bad with this as they used to be, but still).

Anyway, redirecting this thread over to the other, no point in answering the same arguments in both:

PS - It's not like Microsoft tries to feed in on trends or anything:

not hypocracy. for reference, i don't own an xbox...nor do i care to. i was merely pointing out that MS can do this--which i feel is interesting, given their lack of profit on xbox HARDWARE. apple needs to do the same with apple products to entrap the consumer into the "apple way of things"--where you can't get free of their propritary formats once you wade in.

It's no secret that Microsoft makes their money on Xbox Live subscriptions -- which they don't include any of in that deal, by the way.

To them this is a no brainer: get students in on the Xbox experience with the cheapest model they offer, and there's a very high likelihood they'll join Xbox Live and fork out a monthly subscription to them. The deal will literally pay for itself. I understand where they're going with it.

yes, but at the same time, if you STOP paying for live...you can still game online, anywhere, with many of the same games that you played on your xbox (only with a pc/ps3--assuming sony is working again). and you still have the xbox games to use offline.

you don't have that luxury with itunes, etc.

Surely, if you buy the same game for both your PC and your Xbox (which, reasonably speaking, I don't think most do). You will be on the PC-boat though, and in the same way you accuse Apple of trying to lock people in, I would assume the same for Windows (when Windows 8 comes around, etc).

It all boils down to money and brand loyalty, for either company.

And as far as iTunes goes, yes, Apple does make a little cash (like 34 cents?) on each song sold and this is likely what they're banking on to make the iPod deal worth their time. And yes, you can listen to your iTunes songs offline as well.

This reminds me though, Microsoft also receives something like $10 per new game sold for the XBox as well - hence the reason new games are usually so expensive and places like GameStop hardly make any money on them (and therefore depend on used game sales).

Like I said, all about the cash.
