can it be used in conjunction with an aem ems? itd be nice to have this stuff displayed on screen rather then having to open a lab top all the time
Very interested to see what the screen will yield. It's one of the main factors I have held off on buying this is in hopes of a better display.
One thing I would ask is if it is possible to include a video out? Some of us have "Or will have soon" double din touchscreens that support video in. Was wondering if it was at all possible to use that as the external video source as it would be nice to be able to lod to the SD card and view the data in realtime on the stereo screen.
No, OBD2/MUT doesn't work that way. Only one device can talk to ECU.
I'll first just make it a simple SD Card datalogger recorder, as that part is already done -- so those that need that feature can have it right away. To make it function as an alternative display to the RGB LCD display that I am still playing around with. I have made one program so it functions as an analog gauge with red needle.
The LCDBC does currently work with the AEM EMS, it's just a matter of software change (firmware). As for the graphics screen working in conjunction with the AEM EMS, it's something that can be done afterwards -- it's just software programming.
It won't do video output as that requires different hardware and more $$$. I also have a double din touchscreen that supports video input, and that's been on my mind to make use of it. I've researched which hardware is needed to get the job done, ordered the specialized microprocessor for video output, however it uses a weird programming language made just for it. I'll look into that some other time.
I would like one please
I'm on the DD touch band wagon for sure.
Just want to throw this out there. The DD units require composite video on the video inputs. If you find it easier to generate digital video it's possible to convert VGA to composite for cheap. I played around with this for a little while, running evoscan on the laptop and outputting the laptop video to the DD unit.

Just read this whole thread over the course of a couple days, and all I can say is IMPRESSIVE. I will be keeping tabs on the progress as this may be a good option for my 91 vr4 when it gets on the road.
I've spent a couple weeks researching on how to generate video for owners with double din GPS units.
1. Raspberry pi - Cheap, lots of memory, but has these faults: won't work in cold weather, SD card linux will go corrupt if not properly shut down, long time to boot up.
2. Parallax Propeller microprocessor - can generate NTSC video easily, very low memory, funky SPIN programming language, boots up instantly.
3. PIC32 microprocessor - the cheapest of the bunch, can generate color NTSC video by using a funky crystal speed that matches NTSC, boots up instantly.
I tried option #2, but my Parallax microprocessor doesn't communicate. I don't have any spare 5 Mhz crystals, so I'm waiting for replacement part.
I will try out option #3, just gotta wait on that funky crystal speed (couple week wait from China). The PIC32 is not designed to handle NTSC video, but with clever programming, someone was able to do it. Here's an example of Pac-Man they did:
