I've done the apple vs PC dance so many times it old hat.

I've let the other person specify a mac model and go to Dell HP or some other site and every time I match or beat the spec for less. I've done this retail to retail.

SUre you can get mac's on sale on refurbs. but you can get any major PC brand on sale or referbed too.

Hell a few weeks ago I was surfing a Best Buy site and they had and I7 based dell desktop for $150 even after getting a KB, Mouse and monitor It would have been a steal. But its not fair to use that sale price as a comparison to mac.

Shawn, Since when do they sell motherboards for mac's separately?

On a Mac, you can filter your search settings. (I'm guessing you can do this on PC's???) Ours was on moderate and apparently thru searches you can attract malware which is what happened to us. Please do not ask me to explain further because I can't.

All things considered, there are options out there to make it work (sans magic). For an easy upgrade, I was considering the X5365 since they are compatible pin for pin with my Mac Pro.
Willing to share prices and part numbers that would let you do the upgrade?

In other words, he got drive-by malware and since he had no virus software he had to call first a friend and then apple support to clean up the mess.

HE messaged a friend then called tech support which fixed up the minor problem within 20 minutes. I guess this kind of thing never happens on a PC?

It's funny how you haters turned a peaceful thread into a 'we be hatin' thread. lol

The 5300 series that I was referring to should work with my current setup without an upgrade to the motherboard. From the Mac users I know of that have upgraded further, they've usually been able to cop some good deals on the other compatible parts they needed to upgrade on eBay (if they wish to build on the same computer).

All I was getting at is that yes, you can upgrade your Mac. It's a myth that they put the components under lock and key to keep you out. Have you looked at the underside of the new unibody Macbook Pro's or Mac Mini's? Or the side panel of a Mac Pro? Did you know that, despite what some Apple haters have falsely accused, the battery on the newer iPhone 4 is actually easily user replaceable - and can be accessed by simply removing two screws? I understand it's easy to overlook these things when you don't own one and really haven't taken the time to rip it apart and play with it.

Apple computers, in many ways, aren't far removed from their PC counterparts. Sure, they're refined and made to "look all pretty" both inside and out -- but our RAM, harddrives, processors etc are not some sort of proprietary Apple brand. I'm sure you know this already, but with statements like "Apple upgrade path = replace computer", I can see how a more novice user would take this grand generalization and become an Apple hater themselves.

Anyway, what happened to Scotty was this:
The Mac Security Blog » Intego Security Memo

Sucks, but really a simple fix and an even simpler thing to avoid (without the need of any anti-virus software).

Scotty if you had an Antivirus like most normal ppl [only an idiot would run without one......even on a mac ] that had a browser plug in it wouldn't allow you to visit a malware infected site [hell I couldn't visit 3si during the virus episode]. Go and buy Kaspersky for MAC. I deal with this sort of thing ALL DAY on PCs and it only takes 3 mins to get rid of one of those fake antiviruses. Not 20

Sister just got an iPhone4 after not being able to stop using mine.
After initially meeting the new GF, and now being together for 6 month's she's gone from "Do not DARE talk about your stupid fucking iphone" to as of late...."Ummm............I want an iphone now my nokia is shit" (some E5 thing)

I still love mine, one thing is I would like more then 10 home screens to flick through. 175 apps and counting!

    You sure about that?

I just went to Dell and Apple.com and build a similar computer on each site, or more specifically I chose the base model iMac and built a Dell all in one that was comparable.

Yes the Dell started out at $599, but after I added on all of the extras that come standard on an iMac the price was a bit more.

Here are the specs that I could not match.

    Screen size:
    Dell All in One : 23" 1920 X 1080
    Apple iMac: 21.5" 1920 X 1080

    Processor:
    D1: AMD II 2.8 ghz
    iMac: i5 2.5 ghz

    Video Card:
    D1: ATI Radeon HD 4270
    iMac: ATI Radeon HD 6750

    Price:
    D1: $1,138.95 + $99 shipping = $1,237.95
    iMac: $1,199.00 shipped

Prices seem pretty damn close to me. The iMac is actually less expensive, but at those prices being that close it all comes down to personal preference.

The whole point of my previous post and this one, sorry Scotty that I'm helping to keep your thread off topic, is that when you match them spec for spec Apple is on par with their pricing.

The BIG difference comes that you cannot easily home build your own like you can a windows or Linux PC and save the hundreds that way.

And for the arguments about Apple computers in a work place, that point is void, 1 all of Apple's office software can open, edit and natively save out all Microsoft office files types. And in the worst case scenario, such as I have to work with Access databases, Apples come with bootcamp pre installed, my computer duel boots in Windows. Problem solved.

I own both, home built Windows PC and Apple computers. Both have their benefits and draw backs. But the constant Apple is overpriced is BS.
