Not to politicize the thread, but I'd guess Obama is now unbeatable in 2012. Even if it was all coincidence on Obama's part, many will credit him with getting the job done just for approving the mission. The GOP didn't have any strong contenders to begin with, now that he can claim to be strong on national defense too, he'll be nearly impossible to stop next year.

If Al Qaeda disbands, and terrorism definitively ends before the election, Obama will surely be re-elected.

I am going to treat myself to 15 minutes of schadenfreude, followed by another fifteen minutes of glockenschtuppen, before I return to matters at hand.

What was the rationale for burying Bin Laden at sea, by the way?

I think its great he is finally done, but do we really need to party like its 1999 over another humans death? Well I guess if your in the military your job is done so those guys tasked with the actual job of getting obama I can understand but I dunno just seems kinda like muslims celebrating when 9/11 happened...

Wait, Bin Laden was the only body taken out of the compound, and almost immediately buried at sea. WTH? That seems kind of odd. Yeah, it's islamic tradition. Seems fishy his was the only body taken, then we dropped it in the water.

How many of you really think he's dead? He may well be alive and in our custody, but Obama and the military wanted everyone to THINK he was dead. After all, he would be a wealth of information. I'm sure their orders were to capture him if possible.

I do not advocate celebrating the death of anyone, but my belief is moderated by a compulsion similar to Corey's - Bin Laden, for me, personnified genuine evil in human form.

Over and over again, we decry the current and historical oversteps of religion - I wonder if this will be seen as oppression of Islam?

I’m a bit surprised they didn’t get him alive. I really don’t want to start buying into conspiracy theories though. I think it is what it is, they found him and killed him. They might not have wanted to get into a big circus trial and thought it would be better to just cap his ass.
