(you know I had to say something!)

Congrats on the upgrade! If it weren't for this house buying thing I'd be building a 2600K system right about now.
It compares well to the I5-2500k that I was looking at. I was able to save a few $$ with the AMD setup. When it was tested with software that was written to take advantage of the 6 cores it was faster than the I5.

Upgrade path should be easier as going amd/asus to amd/asus should let me upgrade and be stable with out having to reinstall windows.

Not according to this link. The i5-2500k is more powerful. And having 2 extra cores is useless unless the program your running can utilise them.

Edit: LOL just re-read it and realised you said the software was written for 6 cores... however was this a test program or the program you will be running?

Why argue over a little bit when in 6 months all of it will be obsolete. And once quantum computing starts well then it is a whole different ballgame. Speed should jump at least 10 fold if not more in one leap.

Quantum Computing is a LONG way off.
Planing on doing any over clocking?
And what video card are you running?

I looked at several review sites. In game performance they were very close. When tested with non-games apps it was as fast or faster. Several video encoding apps were up to 2x as fast.

The proc this is replacing is from 2007 I keep systems a while. While right now the world is not 6 core ready it will be shortly and this should be out performing the I5 at that point. AMD has not failed me yet.

Good choice of RAM and CPU. I'm loving my quad-core AMD so far. It's taking everything I'm throwing at it, including maxed-unit Starcraft 2 games which are known to be very CPU-intensive.

My DVD to AVI converter is using all 6 cores the old system took over 2 hours to convert a movie. Looks like this will do it in 30 minutes. With processor to spare.

Really? Two hours is quite a bit. I always thought the conversion was mostly dependent on the video card though.

I've used some converter tools to convert some football games from .mp4 to AVI and it's taken about 30 minutes.
