Too much land development, and there is not enough soil to soak up the water.... causing flooding. Then there are the dams that impede the flow of water and all that jazz. It all adds up, causing floods.

    I feel their pain

That sounds like the state I live in over in Australia. It's the size of Texas and a few months ago 50% of it was underwater.

100 year flood means you are IN a designated flood zone as determined by FEMA. Typically called zone A or AE. That means that you can expect a flood, at least once, every 100 years. If you have a mortgage, you are required to carry flood insurance in this situation. The next zone down from this is called zone B. This is the 500 year flood zone. Same thing, once every 500 years a flood can be expected. This zone does not require flood insurance. Beyond that is zone X and C, which are not prone to flooding and no insurance is required.

Yep we have a lot of military people helping out. But they are only a small portion of the numbers of people that are flood fighting. We had some 15,000 people make 8 million sand bags for the last 4 weeks.

It was windy yesterday and we had 3' waves sweeping across the interstate. Of course it was closed. Otherwise those waves would be able to pound a car off the highway into the ditch which would make the car submerged in 8"+ of ice cold water. My house and road are still dry. Road might go under Friday. I should go fishing in my drivway on Friday. HAHA! Setup a lawnchair and a few brews and do some fishing. For the next few days I will be stuck unable to go anywhere so might as well put my feet up and enjoy a break from the flood fight.

Hmm now we get 4 inches of new snow fall today. The interstate just opened from Grand Forks to Fargo. However the ditches still are full and the farm fields are full of ice cold water. The water laps across the white edge line of the interstate in many places and the ditch if you slide off is 8' deep of ice cold water. Add 4 inches of snow and I will be reading about people that will die tonight when they lost control and slid off the road into the water filled ditch and died from hypothermia. Well it won't be me I can not go anywhere for a few days my drive and road are under water now.

I do not have any digital media devices sorry. But the national news has been putting video footage on TV so if you have seen the news lately you should have seen some footage of the highway at least under water. We had a national video clip from a helicopter film a line of semi trucks driving down the interstate that has about 1 foot of water on it. They all had wakes like boats and from the side and above at a distance all you saw was water for miles around. It appeared that these trucks are driving across a lake.
You could not see the road bed under the water from the video. You could not see any thing in the frame not even trees or power lines or road signs that would give any illusion that there was land anywhere nearby. Just water and trucks driving over it sending out wakes like boats. The frame showed the trucks and about one mile to either side of the highway it was and still is all water but in some places it has gone down about 1 foot.

It is very odd but to the east of my house about 1 mile is a line of evergreen trees near the river. They are half way submerged right now but the top half is covered in snow.
A snow flocked evergreen half under water is an odd sight. I should make christmas cards with a picture like that.
