That's leftover head gasket material that I scrapped off the head and was stuck near the oil pan. As I removed the pan some of the material fell into it.

Went by Advance and Autozone today. Neither of them could get me the head. They list it but none are available apparently. Still need to check with O'Reilly and if they don't have one I'll go by the pick-a-part that just opened here and hope they have some 4G63s lying around. Otherwise I could take the head I have now over to the machine shop to see if they can actually fix this.

Yeah, those rod bearings look basically brand new, but they've done their job and protected the crank from a lot of small debris... Based on the look of the bearings, I'd say there's a fair chance you found assembly lube... Which would be cause for concern if the PO forgot to mention a rebuild.

The output shaft looks really good.

Obviously be sure to clean out all the head gasket material. When I do in-car head swaps with composite gaskets, I use a shop vac to collect head gasket debris as I scrape it off (hold it as close to the blade as I can).

Did you read my mind or did I post previously that I thought it was assembly lube? I don't remember. Regardless, I think that's the most logical explanation.

I have cleaned most of the gasket debris off with a scraper. Still need to go over it again and make sure I got everything.

Update: the project is in a holding pattern due to the birth of my two sons. I went ahead and ordered parts from Advance Auto necessary to put the head back on as there was a special going on and I was able to get the parts at a great price. I'll have to take the build at a much slower pace than I have but every once in awhile I'll have time to work on it with the help we'll be having with the boys.

Still going to stick with the build plan for the most part. I was tempted by some Crower Cams being sold locally for $250 but I told myself to stick with the plan (and the budget)! The first break I get I plan on taking a trip to the local pull-a-part to get a DOHC head. There are a ton of non-turbo ones in the yard and the only difference is the cams, and my turbo exhaust cam is good so all I need is the intake cam.

Ill keep that in mind. That's pretty close to us. I can get a head from this yard for $40 though.
