Thread: No intake pipes... drawbacks?

    but if you put on a set of filters right on the inlet?

    it will be better than nothing (imho) but not as effective as tubes which maximize linear airflow.

    if you're running a DRAG-ONLY car, leave it open. just remember that there's a reason we check for FOD around runways, taxiways and parking ramps. it's because those little tiny bits can cause MASSIVE damage to turbines.

    even the dejon pipes have curves right before the turbo inlet, so how much 'linear' pipe is needed to give the turbos the ideal turbulence free air? i know the GM MAF recommends ~6" of straight pipe to minimize turbulence so that the MAF can get a proper reading. so assuming 6" of straight section is needed to get rid of any turbulence the dejon pipes arent exactly ideal. I know im comparing the turbulence free air needed for a MAF to the turbulence free air needed for the turbos, so its kinda apples to oranges. But what about if we had a set of truly linear inlet pipes? I’m not looking at my engine bay right now, so i dont know exactly how much room we have, but i would think that you could whip up some straight pipes with filters pretty easily and cheaply…

    Just thinking out loud. Feel free to comment.

    Edit: keep in mind that the op wasn’t looking for the ‘best/highest hp’ setup, just something that was a different shape and would give him more room. So as long as the ‘different’ setup offered similar performance to the dejon pipes it would be a good option.

    Like the OP I had some clearance issues. To solve them I decided to take a different route and just relocate my BOV, but the MAF is still in a ‘odd’ spot where the plug on the bottom just lightly touches the rear filter. So far I havent seen any signs of the filter rubbing on the wire harness, but it still worries me and I check for wear every time I pop the hood. So if I could change my rear turbo intake pipe to a more ‘worry free’ setup I would…

    people who have the battery in the trunk could probably utilize a setup similar to stock with an air box, intake bubble, and two preturbo intake pipes. Simply have a massive air filter/box where the battery used to be and have the preturbo intake pipes come out of that area. The rear pipe would be almost perfectly straight and the front pipe would only be a few inches longer. That setup should still flow decently, offer atleast as good of air flow as the dejon pipes, and give more space.

    Picture something like this where the red circle is an air filter/box and the green lines are the intake pipes.


    That should give people with a FMIC setup and the Blow Through Y-Pipe setup much more room.

    I'm assuming you guys all think I would run my car without filters. Keep in mind, I would buy filters for the turbo inlet. I would NOT run them open.

    When I saw Tug's VR4, he had his turbos completely open. Says he's run them like that forever. I thought he was insane, but they were TD05 turbos and looked fine.

    very nice, chris. do you get any "odd-behavior" at partial throttle? stutter/surge from the turbos? i've wondered if it makes a difference having a single intake or separate ones for each bank.

    No problems at all, and I did this a while ago so I have had lots of time for idle, cruising etc.

    I've thought about doing something similar, but have the tops of the intake filters just meet each other and have them basically run underneath the Ypipe, so the stock MAF/airbox location would just be open.
