    upgraded cams

Now I know our stock valvetrain is pretty weak but I noticed that places like C3Motorsports and Split Second sell heads with upgraded cams and not upgraded valvetrain. So my question is, would it be possible to run like a 264 cam and keep the factory 7300 rpm redline? Or would I screw myself over? Please no smart ass remarks, getting really tired of those from certain people. Just wanna have a question answered without any d-bag rambling off their mouth.

Hi there. From the research I've done I was led to believe that even on 272 cams the stock valvetrain is OK, and anything above will need upgraded springs and retainers. I read numerous posts from members with 272 cams on stock heads will no downsides, so this was enough for me to do it on my 3.5L
    Hope that helped.

Up to 272 cams should be fine with stock springs and stock rev limit. If you bump the rev limit though you should upgrade the springs and retainers. At least that is what I have found from my research.

Where did you gather that our valvetrain is "pretty weak"?

Everybody that sells cams like 3sx and IPS say on their description to upgrade valvetrain with even a minor cam like a 264.

Its not so much weak, as it is with every head that if you have to high a lift and to high an rpm your valves will not re-seat fast enough. I am pretty sure that's correct.

I think the limit is a 264 with the stock valve springs and rev limit. Other than that, you will need to change.

Thats what I have asked before to 3sx and IPS but they told me even a 264 needs upgraded valvetrain. Cuz when I had my heads off I was gonna go with 264, but stayed stock cuz I didnt wanna spend a bunch of money on the springs.

i guess it depends how you're gonna drive your car after the upgrade cams... if your gonna drive the shit out of it, then i guess upgrading the valvetrain would be necessary.
