    6G72 Coffee table V2.0

Things at work have finally calmed down a bit where I can sneak in and get some projects done. One is the engine coffee table that Ulrich has been patiently waiting for the last few months. I learned a lot doing the first one and had several ideas for the next.

He provided the block which turns out is a remanned turbo block from mitsu. Pulled this off the block and plan on reattaching it once the table is finished. too bad they fucked it up! I'll show what happened later.

    First off is disassembly!

Saving the oiling rings this time. After the piston is coated I'll put them back on. Minor detail that'll look neat.

Pulling all the alignment pins out, these 2 for the axle were a bitch.

Ended up just cutting them off.

Everything disassembled and ready for burnoff!

Instead of welding the rods to the block, I decided to bolt them in this time. This way I can powder coat the rods and pistons separate from the block. 2 reasons why I am doing it this way:

*The metal on them is thinner and will cure faster. On my last table the chrome powder wasn't as reflective because those parts heated up a lot faster than the block. Coating them separately should fix that.

*I plan on coating the rods the same color as the block. It was really difficult to do this on my last table and some powder still got onto the areas I didn't want it to.

Pressing out the wrist pin. Cruel setup but it's not like this piece will ever run again.

    All finished.

You can see the rod on the top was the one that spun. This was because they installed it backwards on the piston. The counterweight was on the wrong side. Simple mistake that caused the motor to die prematurely.

There really isn't enough deck space to drill and tap a bolt so I had to get a little creative. Had a crazy thought to use the stock head bolt holes and just make an adapter piece for a 1/4x20 hex bolt to thread in it's place.

Had a few ideas for this and the easiest was to just make one out of the several junk head bolts I have laying around.

First step was setting up the head bolt in a lath and drilling a 7/32 hole 2" deep in the center of it. Stock head bolts are pretty tough. Ended up sacrificing 2 drill bits for this adventure.

This was pretty simple. A very basic lesson from our head machinist and I had them done in about 20 minutes.

Then I tapped the 1/4x20 threads.

    SUCCESS!!!

Here's what I'll look like installed on the motor.

Since the hex bolt is recessed (almost perfectly) into the rod, it'll look like nothing is holding the rod to the bolt.

Next step is to cut off the head bolt so it'll thread into the block which I'll take care of tomorrow after the block is burned off and blasted.

    That's it for now!

Everything burned off and ready for blast & coating.

Had some left over chrome powder so I coated the pistons.

They turned out great! I did blasted them with the 180 grit instead of the 24 grit this time.

    That's it for now.
