    X02 Black, tri-coat or not?

Is my 92 VR4 a tri-coat color or not, its X02 black albany pearl or toscana black pearl as some web sites are calling it now. I checked a few places and they said it just had pearl in the base and it wasnt a true tri-coat paint. I'm pretty sure I read that most of the pearls for our cars are.

Just because something is pearl doesn't mean its tri coat. And just because something is tri coat doesn't mean its pearl.

My car for instance was a tri coat from the factory and was not a pearl. The color it is now is a pearl and its a base/clear.

I'm not finding anything one way or the other. Best way to find out is to call an automotive paint supplier.

I understand that stealthee, I never researched this stuff before just had the idea pounded in my head from reading the forums over the years. I am painting a fiberglass front bumper, I know it won't be perfect but was hoping for close.

If you can, just shoot a couple test pieces (I use cut up plastic bottles of detergent or something similar), one with some pearl mixed in the base and one with some pearl mixed in the mid-coat. This would show you which one matches better or it could show you that there is almost no difference. This isn't so practical if you aren't mixing the pearl yourself though. It is much more forgiving if the pearl is in the base.
