Thread: Installed B&M oil cooler in the side (big, fmic, fan, pics, etc).

    how in the hack did you get the oil cooler lines to work?

    I did have to do some minor trimming. I'll try and get some pictures up tonight.

    yeah there is a separate thermostat for the oil cooler, but I think the oil thermostat opens at a really low temperature. you'll find that because water is so much better of a conductor that your oil temps will always be within 5-10 degrees of your water temps. the only time it really differs is on the road course.

    So theoretically I could run a huge ass fan on the oil cooler and not worry about it being too cold because the temp bypass would stop it from going to the cooler?

    yeap, if the oil gets too cold the oil themostat will start to close. true, you'd be cooling oil that's just sitting at room temperature, but it's not gonna hurt anything (other than using fan power)

    not sure on the exact temperature, but 4g63 oil cooler bypass spec is 100degC. ours is probably similar.

    Had to trim around part of the headlight bucket and the fender. I could have used a 120 to 180 degree hose end and might not have had to trim as much but I didn't want to buy another 20 dollar fitting.





    Covered the hose in wire loom to protect other parts from rubbing. I also had to tie it tight to make sure it wouldn't hit the alternator pulley.



    Here is the other side of the cooler. I cut two lines (tin snips) into the sheet metal and folded a flap up to make more room in the hole for the new line + intercooler piping.



    here is an early stage picture. I did some more work to file the edges and make sure it would not rub anything after.



    The big thing is to make sure your npt to an adapters screw all the way into the oil cooler. It was tight and I even had to file the adapter a little to avoid having the cooler crack.

    hmmm... any particular reason why you didn't mount it with the fittings on the bottom?

    While the core would fit upside down the fittings would be sticking down more and I'd be worried about ground clearance and breaking off the fittings. Doing it this way lets me use the available space on the sides for the fittings. Also I'm not even sure if it would fit to the side of the ypipe. Currently the yipe is tucked right up against the body for that to fit with the rest of the piping.

    Because when you shut off the car all the oil in the cooler doesn't go back into the pan. It will give a false reading on the dipstick. Oil coolers need to always be mounted with the fittings up.

    I'm surprised that the oil will drain back past the oil pump without it turning?
