E85 is a way for car manufacturers to artificially inflate their CAFE numbers. When a car is Flex Fuel capable the manufacturers are only required to report the mpg based off of how far the car travels on gasoline only, basically all the ethanol miles are free and count as nearly infinite MPG.

Also instead of using food to feed people (even the poor people here in the US) we throw it away and use it to create fuel for cars at an enormous expense to consumers of both food and gasoline. And just to top it off these farmers only grow corn simply because the Federal Government pays them to grow it...then they sell it and make more money.
At least in the case of e85, we get a cheap race fuel. Still bullshit, but at least someone that isn't lining the pockets of politicians can benefit. Hardly "environmentally friendly" though.

I saw news about gasoline produced by algae several years ago here:
Sapphire Energy unveils world?s first renewable gasoline

That looked promising, but I had a feeling that could be difficult on a large enough scale and figured the oil companies would not be happy with such discoveries. I cringed watching commercials in the last year where exxon-mobile "scientists" were speaking like they had discovered this. This makes me think that something like this will not see the light of day until the oil companies can profit from it themselves. It makes me sick when greed hinders innovation.

Citreon are just crap but they have the peugeot diesel engine (or used to have), renualt are a complete fail with a company motto of (its not a fault its a feature). seat are now owned by VAG along with many other manufacturers.
but worst of all are those damn fords! they still haven't figured out how to make a car go 4 mile without filling up!
Are you talking about reliability or performance? If it's reliability, that's no good. If it is performance though, you need to remember that the person that wants 50+ mpg does not really want or need to go fast. He most likely just wants a vessel to carry himself, his family, and his things from place to place. Many of us here would find it unacceptable for a car to take 20 seconds to get to 60 and top out at 75, but that type of vehicle is fine for the majority of people. I think the main complaint is that many newer, small, cheesy cars in the us still manage to get relatively crappy fuel mileage, while the European small cars just seem to be more efficient as a whole. I mean, you talk of fords having poor fuel mileage, but the focus is probably one of our better vehicles in that category.

A regular diesel volkswagen bluemotion polo gets like 75-90 mpg. That was enough for me to not give a rats ass about hybrids.

I think I misread one of your earlier posts about Americans thinking diesels are slow and sluggish. Just skimming it, I thought it said they are slow and sluggish. My fault.
