Local buddy of mine broke the t-case in his 92 VR4 (300m 18 spline OS)... There was NO grip on the track that night. We were spinning the tires like crazy until the sun gear welded to the output shaft, the VCU split open and the t-case exploded.

So yes, you can have too much wheel spin too.

that was my t case i sold him. that preload deal worked awesome. it was before the billet mid cases were available.

doing this shit for a living and racing these cars for 12 years... the 6 speeds need a brace if you have any type of serious clutch AND your gonna race it OFTEN. the case fatigues over time and will break. in the short term.. they seem to last a while.

when i bought my red 96, i wanted to get a brace in there asap. before i could, i ended up racing a friends big block nova. i was a PUSSY coming out of the hole... i was gonna ride the clutch hard. my foot never left the pedal and that shit broke and destroyed all of the parts inside. that transmission was a rebuild from the previous owner. whoever had that tranny must have raced here and there and it was ready to go by the time i went to race. the parts are only getting older and the failures are far more common.

just like me.. Matt M broke plenty of shit! its part of racing and part of winning. i can be easier on the parts but id also be .5sec slower. people always have me drive their cars when they want to see how fast the car can actually go lol

Sooooo now that Ray has said what the rest of us have been saying as well, can we agree that the 6spd NEEDS a brace and move on?

I would rather be .5 seconds slower. Unless of course Ray lets me drive his car.

Ray, what do you think makes the 5 speed bellhousing so much stronger? I've only heard of 1 breaking that didn't have a t-case explode at around the same time.

Isn't the 6spd the same physical size as the 5 spd but with an extra gear crammed in there?

The point that's been echoed is if you're making big power and/or have an unforgiving clutch and/or plan to race every weekend then yes - you will likely need a brace. I will maintain that for the average 3/s street car setup, occasional track racer making modest power with modest goals (mid/low 11's) then it's not an absolute requisite. Shit does happen, though; if you plan to race then plan to break. They've all got an expiration date, it's just not printed on them. I will reiterate one of my original statements of NOT having an overkill clutch. I've said all along a full-faced Stage 2 or similar clutch is more than sufficient for 90% of the users out there. The guys that are running superduper Stage 18.7++ clutches on their 13g car are just asking to unnecessarily break drivetrain parts. I put 30k miles on an RPS Stage 2 and RPS flywheel, ran lots of 11 second passes, dozens of low 12's, hundreds of street launches, AWD burnouts, etc.. and that clutch still had plenty of life when I sold the car.

I do recall seeing a thread on the other site way back when where there was some thorough analysis and hypothesis on the case failures. Fairly certain the root cause is not a mystery.

i think were all kind of agreeing here...

i broke my 5 speed bellhousing in 06 or so. i since then did a brace in that too. the reason any of them break is from the counter shaft getting pushed apart from the main shaft. it breaks out the counter shaft bearing register then obviously bad things happen. the 6 speed seems weaker than the 5 speed due to the steeper 1st gear being a higher tq multiplier. if the 6 speed was launching in second, thered never be an issue lol
