Ohh I see what you are talking about. It's burnt carbon/caked oil/etc.

I had them done with a valve job 40k ago, I choose not to do the guides then. I think that has come back to bite me.

Oh boy. You had a valve job and didn't have them do the guides?? Did they check for play when they did the work?

Ah, ouch. I just recently got talked out of making the same mistake. Your shop should have talked you out of not replacing the guides

    I empathize, Toni.

    Did my 120K, forgot seals.

Sitting at a light takes a few thousandths off my teeth.

Thing is, I know better than that...

I'm glad I did my guides, but my heads have been decked so much they can't be decked again. Basically spent $600 for something that can't be saved if any damage occurs to the surface. Just picked up another set of heads which have more meat on them...but will likely need new vss and guides. I'll disassemble them in a few weeks and see.

Spent about an hour out in the garage wire wheeling paint off of some of the subframes and underbody. Didn't get to measuring the rear subframe bushing stuff since those items are all by the garage door and I didn't want to both opening it with the rain. I'll look into it tomorrow evening after work. Have to make up some oil cooler lines in the morning to go with the oil cooler I sold, anybody know the approximate lengths off hand? Somewhere around 18" each is what I'm guessing.

I wouldn't come to any conclusions about the guides until you take off the heads and take some measurements. Are they OEM guides? How many miles on the heads?
