    Even with the heads on I've turned it plenty of times by the crank bolt. That is why the factory put that square hole in the middle that just happens to fit a 1/2" extension perfetly and why they put the hole in the inner fender to access it.
    I think the concern is that the bolt will bottom out and crush the threads on the end. Then the crank threads might get messed up when you take the bolt out. The crank that was in my engine when I bought it had screwed up threads.. I'm wondering if that was why.. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like bottoming out bolts..

    that is why you use a spacer as I mentioned

    I have a stack of washers as dedicated crank bolt spacers stored with the engine stand mounting hardware
    1992 Kilder Green VR4 - First 4G swap in a 3S. 2.0, auto, awd. 9.65 at 143mph. Now LS swapped. 8.52 at 162.

    Today I put the wheels on the 3k, let it idle, and drove it around the storage unit compound





    I also Sea Foamed the Jeep and changed the fluids in the engine, trans, transfer case, and rear end. While I had the rear diff cover off I repainted it and the bolts.



    I'm going to repaint the axle housing when I have time to take it out and strip it down to do it right.
