Out of curiosity, since you dont have anything invested in 72 rods that you are wanting to reuse, why not build a 74? If you bust a 74 crank, you won't have to spend the extra $900 machine work to get another crank to fit the 72 again. Just balance to your rods/pistons.

Beyond all the extra work associated with fitting a 74, I'll use my current engine to build a 3.0L, and it's important to me that my 2 engines be interchangeable. $900 worth of machine work doesn't intimidate me. The only thing that worries me is the long term availability of Ray's pistons and rods.

Makes sense. BTW the 72 stroker uses 72 rods, so no problem with availability. Ross is making Rays pistons so you should be good if Ray goes AWOL on us. If for some reason, both Ray and Ross disappear, anybody (JE, wiseco, etc) can make custom pistons for your application. No worries there either.

I never bothered to ask this, but the stroker is a 6g74 crank right? So the rod journals are wider but it uses 72 rods?

Yes, custom machined crank with 72 rods and rays custom piston for 72/74 stroker.

From Ray's thread..."ive come up with a new technique that KEEPS the stregnth of the 74 crank and still fits it in your 72. a crank is only as strong as the area of the smallest cross section. in the corners of the mains, stock cranks are rolled to a smaller diameter for cost savings but thats where the cracks start.

i have a new way of machining the large 74(or 75) cranks down while leaving these corners untouched so the diameter and overlap are the same as a stock 74. (leaving a large radius like a race crank) this will use custom main bearings to make this work and makes this design as strong as a stock 74 can be! (which is stronger than a 72)"

Everything you ever wanted to know is buried somewhere in this thread...http://www.3si.org/forum/f1/3-5l-6g7...my-car-405057/

But my injectors should be back from witchhunter tomorrow. Curious to see what their report says.

Ah, thanks for that. Obviously I haven't exchanged too many emails with Ray yet.

So, now I will worry about the availability of the custom pistons and custom main bearings

I've got the drive train to tolerate a bit more torque, I think. I need to weld a brace into my new 5 spd (old one is braced but disassembled), but it's not nearly the issue that it is with the 6's. I also need to upgrade my differentials (brand new front/center, ~116K on the rear).

My goal isn't to make a bunch more power. It's to make a little more power with a much higher safety factor than I've ever had.
Buy my stroker Adam. Nah I want to use it eventually. It's staying bagged and disassembled in my basement until I upgrade to a bigger setup. My drivetrain and subframe restoration comes first.

Today I took my wheels off and cleaned them up to sell since I got a deposit on them. I also found out from the tracking number I finally got today that my injectors were delivered Monday but it must have gone to the wrong house. The guy misspelled my address although the house number, zip, and full name were correct. I traded my 550s and needed those others to get my car running so I'm going to check with the postman tomorrow morning to see if they have any other info on file for which house it got delivered to. I don't want to chalk up more money for injectors.
