    1996 3000GT OBD2 Port Doesn't Read

Car in question is a 1996 3000GT base model, essentially stock. Has run with a CEL for a little over a year without getting diagnosed. Still drives fine and gets 27mpg, so we never had much concern for it. Recently, the battery was disconnected, clearing the light. However, it never came back on. Curious to find out what the problem was, we took it up to Autozone to have it scanned, and was told that it "would not communicate" with their scanner.

Now, the car is due for inspection. In TX, it is required that the OBD2 port be functional, and no TSI test will be given in lieu of the OBD2 test. We can't figure out why its not communicating with the scanner. A lot of people have said that the cigarette lighter circuit is often the same as the OBD2 circuit, but the cigarette lighter plugs are still in good working condition.

At the same time, the door courtesy lights and all dome lights have gone out. I'm not sure if this is a related problem or not, but it sounds as thought it could all be one circuit...?

Had a similar problem diagnosing an issue with my '93 RT/TT, ended up being a BENT #1 ping on the dignostic port.

Start with the simple stuff and work your way through it.

94/95 was. (Actually, it's still OBD1. The "hybrid" term is misleading)

96 was the first year of OBD2.
