I like the stickerbombed case. Looks clean.

Laptops are nice if you travel a lot and want to play games I guess, but you have to sacrifice paying premium for a computer that will have a smaller than ideal screen, minimal upgrade-ability and an underpowered version of a popular gpu. You can counter some of those points with a more expensive customizable Sager or ASUS laptop, but the price/performance just isn't there with laptops. On top of that they are generally prone to overheating and for gaming have to be plugged in. A 2000 would get you a pretty decent laptop, but a 2000 desktop would destroy everything it touched.
i'm not about to take a desktop to the sandbox.

again though, you say that about a 2k desktop...but you're discounting the cost of a good monitor. last desktop i bought had a 22" monitor that cost me $850. seriously. and the resolution was only "slightly" better than it is on my current laptop (1920x1440 vs. 1920x1200). i could care less about screen size; what i want is dpi. wuxga 15.4" was as close to 150dpi as i could get this side of an iphone. i would upgrade to a 17" if i could get a wqxga screen; but somehow, i don't see that happening for YEARS (if ever). f**k 1080p & the glut of low-resolution crap that it has generated.

yes, you're going to pay a little bit more for laptop gaming; but it's not as much as people make it out to be. gateway p-7801 being a perfect $1100 example. remember, sitting 18" from a laptop screen is probably the same as sitting across the room from a 70". there isn't much need to upgrade from 4gb ram & quad core (as quad core optimization hasn't even been fully rolled out). and "underpowered" or not, the FPS benchmarks on good gaming laptops are nothing to sneeze at; so only the most HARDCORE of videophile gamers would be "unsatisfied" with gaming on a good (read $2000) gaming rig. and if you fall into that category, you probably don't own an xbox/ps3 on principle.

people just don't seem to appreciate that for 1/2 the cost of a top-end rig 10 years ago, you can have an insanely more capable (relative to graphic demands) laptop today.

in any event, i despise console FPS's for destroying the genre. i primarily blame MS for this.

(and of course a platinum GCN & a wii). i have the same pelican switcher box too. lol! i've actually been weeding out old carts as i've downloaded them on VC (although nintendo has been sucking ass lately on VC releases).

Yeah, I've owned all the revamped versions of the older consoles and decided I just like the originals and sold them. I also didn't show the Game Gear, Nomad, 32X and the Wii. I also have backup systems for most of these.

The one question you have to ask yourself is, do you have all the original boxes?

I'll have to look into the Neo Geo though.

and for half the price of that you can get a desktop that blows it out of the water, no contest. How can you even compare a modern computer to one from 10 years ago? I mean really

Also, a good monitor is $300 or less these days. I'm talking 23" 1080p (or 1200p) IPS. Regardless, sitting with your face in a small laptop screen is NOT the same experience as enjoying a large screen TV from the comfort of your couch.

You sound like an old guy that was into computers a few years ago and then got out of it because it got too confusing.

boxes? yes....i did. i actually had kept the boxes for my nes, snes and n64 for over 10 years (well, at least the first two). i eventually got rid of them all. i was trying to de-clutter my life. i had also kept all the boxes from every cartridge i'd ever owned; and the manuals. again, too much clutter. i got rid of my extra zapper gun, the power pad, the odyssey 2, the master system, the atari 2600, the ti99-4a, the trs-80, etc. i had every intention of buying the complete virtual boy library; but i've never gotten around to it.

i find it hard to believe you like the NES mark1 over the mark2. you actually like f**king with your cartridges just to make them work? i don't. only thing i miss about the mark2's is the power light. other than that, i think it's a much better design all around; and the dogbone (while not as iconic) is much more comfortable. not that i really care...i always use an NES MAX when i'm playing.

    next question:

what's the rarest/most expensive cartridge that you own (that you actually enjoy playing). i wish i had a copy of earthbound, but i don't. my MVC (most valuable cart) is probably metal warriors, with a current average sale price of >$65.

Damn! I would have bought some of those. I'm in the process of getting all the boxes and manuals for my NES games. I have all that crap for everything else. Yeah, I does clutter things up but I'm not using that cold storage for anything else. And I honestly think these things are going to keep appreciating. As for my NES, I don't have to fiddle with them as I replaced the 72 pin connector inside and I love the retro look. The most expensive game I own would have to be Mario RPG for the SNES. Although, Ninja Warriors for the SNES is more rare but not more expensive and I still love to play both. Nest in line would probably be Knuckles Chaotix for the 32X.

i have more FPS's loaded onto my laptop at this very moment than 99% of the population has ever played. maybe you enjoy carting a desktop to LAN parties; i found that to get old rather quickly. i like gaming from my couch (or rather, my AK rocker); but not for FPS's. having an extensive background in both goldeneye/perfect dark (um, DUH) and timesplitters--as well as more PC FPS's than you can probably name in 30 seconds--i can definitively state that playing FPS's with a sturdy, flat surface for controls is ideal. i would rather play descent 1 with only a keyboard (which i have done)...than i would pretty much ANY console shooter.

and FTR, a $1000 desktop (including the cost of your $300 monitor) is NOT going to "best" a good $2000 laptop. unless, of course, you plan on buying a $500 video card and spend only $200 on the ram, cpu, motherboard, case, power-supply, and hard-drive COMBINED. roflmfao!

no way that mario RPG is that expensive any more. not after the VC release. FF6 went down in price after the GBA release; same thing. and in any event, chrono trigger is the best 16 bit rpg by a country mile.

yeah, it's too bad i didn't know any collectors back when i was "purging". i grew up with packrat parents...and i just cannot stomach the thought of living like them for the sake of eventually cashing in one day. ever seen that episode of "Amazing Stories" that starred mark hamil? yeah...no thanks.

HD2: OCZ Vertex LE 100GB SSD
    HD3: Seagate 7200rpm 500GB
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Man this is a big, heavy laptop (laptop? right... but... I DO actually put this puppy on my lap sometimes and it sits on an NZXT Cryo LX cooling pad). Screams through just about anything I throw at it (Damn this thing does PS CS5 processing fast).
If I'd waited a bit though, I might have actually gotten the NP7280 instead. Could have gotten it with all the same goodies but with a 17.3" LED and dual Nvidia GTX-480M cards in SLI (AND USB 3.0). Wonder how much faster THAT setup would be for anything involving graphics?

Still, the current setup is up to spec for use as a 3D HTPC (and should be decent when I get around to editing 1080p video). Just need to get a decent display when the geniuses finally make more 3D material available (as opposed to all their stupid Exclusive releases where you can ONLY get the 3D movie with the ourchase of XXX brand's 3D TV).
