Dimmer Switch???

Hard to tell from the pic blur, but I think I can see it now.

I'm not 100% sure how that is causing the dimmer switch to blow. I could just see that not allowing enough current to flow to the lights it's supposed to be controlling. I'd have to look into it some more and maybe someone else could chime in but that just confuses me.

ya my friend (who builds his own wiring harnesses) said it COULD be the culprit, but i dunno. My dash has been removed before by some one. They did work to the Rheostat wiring.

That's exactly why I've been following along quietly. I don't see what is blowing the dimmer, or what any of this has to do with the pop-ups.....

I know its weird, but I swear on my life, that the story is accurate lol.

I pushed my pop-up button twice (up and down) and she blew. All the fuses are fine. The old dimmer switch blew. I can take a picture of it, if you want. You will be able to see what melted.... Maybe it was just old or something?

The picture of the wiring, the black/yellow wires are half connected, and its a loose connection also.. Definitely needs some soldering work to be done to it.

Oh I believe you, it just doesn't make any sense. At least not to me it doesn't.

On second reading I should have worded that better. When I said there's more to the story I meant there's more digging to be done.

okay well as you guys predicted, after i fixed the wiring, plugged everything back in, the dash still doesn't illuminate.

Does the dimmer switch tie into the radio wiring some how? My ex's dad mentioned that. He worked at chrysler for 14yrs, when the stealth first came out, till production stopped.

The wiring for my radio is MANGLED... who ever installed the deck that came with the car when i bought it, did a reallll shitty job. I could take a picture to show you all the nightmare i have to deal with.

Do you have a copy of the electrical portion of the service manual? I would think that the lights in the factory head unit would have dimmed with the dimmer, although I haven't looked at the service manual to confirm yet. I would gut out the radio hack job and try to put the factory wiring back to its original configuration. Scosche makes some really nice adapter sets if there is enough to adapt to once you have it back to normal.

I have found the problem.... i followed the black/yellow wire, which IS in FACT tied in with the radio. I followed it all the way to where the radio plugs in. Some one spliced the wire, taped it allll up with electrical tape, and when i pulled it back i can see the wire all melted.

I followed the black/yellow wire, from the dimmer switch plug to the harness plug that connects the upper harness to the lower harness, which goes from there to the radio connector plugs.

That big orange wire on the right of the plug, is looped going from the black/yellow wire pin to the pin directly above it, and connects to a green/white wire.


As you can see, the green/white wire is melted from the short.

The wire that ties in is to dimm the display on the stock head unit at the same time as the dash lights dimm.
