wow, NOW we're cooking with Gas.

that would not leave much room for my FMIC oil cooler though.

Except, of course, that most of those cars are rear engine.

I've seen that Compuware Corvette in person - the P&M shop was just up the road from mine, and I used to buy their old parts from them. The engine in that car is in the front, but it is set back so far that half the motor is under the windshield glass. The radiator is completely ducted to that vent in the hood - as in, there is sheet aluminum ducting that seals the back end of the radiator to the duct in the hood so that there is no way the exhaust air can go anywhere except out the duct.

On that 3000GT, even with that huge vent, the outflow air from the radiator dumps onto the engine block, and that disrupts the flow path. Most of the exhaust air will still go under the car, not out the vent, unless there is ductwork on the backside of the rad to seal it to the vent - and good luck packaging that.

You cant set back the engine to gain clearance (and a better CG) because the engine/transmission is tied to the front axle centreline.

Incidentally, the picture in the sig - the Photoshopped line-art thing - shows exactly what I am talking about when it comes to poorly ducted FMICs. There are huge gaps on both sides of the end tanks that are basically giant airflow leaks. Almost all the air coming into the front end of that car is going to flow through those gaps, because air always takes the path of least resistance. That FMIC is a great heat sink, but a crappy heat exchanger. The gaps probably help keep the car from overheating though, as they will probably be feeding the radiator.
